Victorian Eclipse

Jordy Smith feeling right at home along the Australian coast

While in Victoria for the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, Jordy Smith looked as sharp as ever preparing for the contest. The raw power of his turns mixed with full rotation air reverses made Jordy a favorite heading into the contest. However, a controversial score in his heat against Julian Wilson, which you’ll see at the end of this clip, did away with his bell-ringing hopes. There’s always next year.

If the world tour was held in right hand pointbreaks he would be a huge chance for world champ. Really did well at Bells. His wave was not underscored; more it was that Wilson’s was overscored. A bit stiff not to make it through but take the good with the bad. Still a good result. Liked the surfing in the vid; just on the Torquay side of Airey’s Inlet. It’s right hand point break heaven on this part of the coast but the waves are typically fat, even though they do have power. Takes a certain type of technique to do well here and Jordy has got it wired. Took Slater many years to work out Bells.
