The City of Solana Beach’s Parks and Recreation Commission is hosting the fifth annual Beach Blanket Movie Night at Fletcher Cove Park on Saturday, August 22nd from 6:00 to 10:00pm. This family friendly event is free and open to the public.
This year Beach Blanket Movie Night will start with live music by singer songwriter Kevin Misajon and feature two new surf films. First film in the lineup will be Tiffany Campbell and Andria Lessler’s “Dear & Yonder.” Campbell and Lessler’s film combines the use of historical and contemporary footage to portray “daring stories of ladies united by the sea.” More than just a surf film, ” Dear & Yonder” beautifully weaves together footage of a 19-year old woman sailing around the world in search of the best waves, an ‘extreme’ woman body surfer in Northern California and the incredible surfing action of some of the world’s top women surfers.
Next up will be the famed Iron Brother’s recent film, “A Fly in the Champagne.” This movie documents the well-known rivalry between surfing’s nine-time world champion Kelly Slater and three-time world champion Andy Irons. Shot on remote reefs in Indonesia “A Fly in the Champagne” captures the two champs’ notorious competitive nature and showcases their incredible surfing skills. Viewers can’t miss the film’s positive message that results from Kelly and Andy’s resolved rivalry. In addition to the evening’s feature films and fun extras, audiences will get a sneak peak at FUEL TV’s new show “Surf Cult.”
The Solana Beach Lifeguard Association will be hosting its 2nd Annual GROM-O-RAMA surf contest from 7am to 1pm on the morning of BBMN. This surf contest is open to kids age 17 and younger. This year an under 8-years of age division has been added for children that want to participate with a parent. Other BBMN attractions will include lots of free giveaways, plenty of refreshments (popcorn, ice cream, cookies and brownies) and a raffle with big ticket prizes — including a Firewire surfboard, beach cruiser bicycle from B&L Bike and Sports, Surf Ride Complete Skateboard, Billabong wetsuit and a BZ soft surfboard. Raffle and refreshment tickets will be available inside the park for a suggested donation of $1.00 per ticket.
All proceeds from BBMN will be used to benefit future Solana Beach Parks and Recreation projects or events. So bring a blanket, pack a picnic and head on down to Fletcher Cove Park on August 22nd for a fun-filled evening of movies under the stars!
