Asbury Park, NJ, September 7, 2009 – The buzzed about surf film, A Pleasant Surprise, will be shown for the first time ever at 7PM this Friday, September 11th at the legendary Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park, NJ in conjunction with The Foster’s Belmar Pro surf contest. The film, a collaboration between cinematographer Kyle Pahlow & creative director Nick Zegel, offers an honest look at the talents of a select group of surfers who live in a truly special part of the United States. Almost three years in the making, A Pleasant Surprise documents a world of contrast as daily changes in weather and waves prove to be all part of a larger picture; thumping beach breaks, cold water, and quick tropical storms are just a fraction of what you will find.
Last January Pahlow and Zegel headed into the editing studio to begin post-production on a project that had begun to take shape. The trailer, posted to Youtube on March 16th, received a huge amount of attention and within days a clip from the film had been featured on Pepsi’s weekly YouTube show POPTUB. A few thousands views, some great feedback from the surf community and a nod from one of the largest soft drink companies on the planet was enough to really light a fire under the ass of the film and its makers.
Fast forward six months and Pahlow and Zegel are just five days from sharing their film with the world. After a seemingly endless number of hours editing, listening to music, designing, and promoting & marketing the film it is no wonder the two are so enthusiastic. A Pleasant Surprise, one of about two dozen surf movies that will be released this year, is finished but the team is not yet resting. Zegel has been busy, booking Brooklyn’s Sean Bones, a vintage reggae inspired indie band, to play the world premiere, promoting premieres, designing t-shirts, screen printing posters and with the help of Pahlow, hand delivering flyers to surf shops up and down the coast. “I’m just excited to finally show the film. It wasn’t until last week when we were sitting at NFL Films making final changes that I realized people are actually going to see this thing!” says Pahlow.
You may be asking what NFL Films, the company responsible for providing most American households with Sunday entertainment throughout football season, has to do with surfing. While Pahlow was attending film school at Temple University he had the opportunity to work at the monster production house based in South Jersey. There he assisted on commercial shoots & NFL games, learning the industry, and most importantly, establishing relationships. The experience allowed Pahlow to add a few new lines to his resume, but more importantly gave him an inside look at what it takes to put together a state of the art production from beginning to end, with a bit of emphasis on the end. When shooting motion picture film the footage is scanned at a high resolution enabling post production to be done digitally. After the editing process the film is locked in and taken to a colorist. This is where the film gets to show its true color, and in this case the true beauty of New Jersey’s coastline and the talent of surfers who call the Garden State home.
What began with a couple hundred feet of film has matured into a full length independent surf film, set to inspire a new generation of surfers and serve as a time capsule for the entire northeast surf community. Aside from Pahlow and Zegel only a handful of individuals, executives from the top three surf film distributors and the screening panel for The New York Surf Film Festival, have seen the film. Just days before Friday’s World Premiere the secrecy, enforced by Pahlow, has created a stir of excitement among surf enthusiasts and the professional athletes who star in the film. If the acceptance of A Pleasant Surprise into The New York Surf Film Festival is any indication, local surfers may finally have an answer, requiring no words, to the popular “There is surf in New Jersey?” They’ll just have to press play.
