Spot: East Cape, MX
The Wave
There are lots and lots of waves out here, some of them named and well known, some of them not. Monuments is a spot close to town, which suffers from being close to Town.
According to the interactive surf map on the www.costa-azul.com.mx website, the spots heading to the east, away from Monuments are: Playa Baraco Varado, Playa el Tule, Playa Las Conchas, Punta Palmilla, Costa Azul, La Bocana, Punta Gorda, Shipwrecks, Nine Palms, Punta Perfecta and Los Frailes.
Some of these places you might be familiar with. Shipwrecks is a right point about nine miles up the road. This was the spot featured in Surfers: The Movie, with Miki Dora and Martin Potter sharing waves, as Scooter Boy took notes.
Farther east from Shipwrecks, Nine Palms is a spot known for being mushy when it’s smaller, but can look like classic California point surf when a big southern hemi is in town.

Best Swell, Size and Direction
The Pacific side of the tip is good for summer and winter swells, picking up everything from south to north. The East Cape is protected from winter surf, but still gets wind swell and other energy year around. This is the place to be when a hurricane is rumbling up along the coast of Mexico, or a southern hemisphere swell is rolling in from the southern ocean. On a big swell, the East Cape lights up with surf and there is more ocean energy than human energy.

Difficulty Level
Difficulty goes up with swell size. The small mushy days are easy and not a bad place for a beginner, because there is a lot of privacy and peace and quiet out here and that is what beginners like best.

Localism Factor The spots in San Jose del Cabo with Mexican kids and outsiders who have been surfing there for years and have staked a claim. The point of driving out along the East Cape is to find a reef or a beach or a point to yourself, and avoid any thought of localism. But that is getting harder and harder to do, as crowd pressures move out from the city.
