Spot: East Cape, MX

Places to stay
Camping is the thing to do on the East Cape, because there are no luxury hotels out here: yet. If you come out here, be prepared with everything: lots of water, mosquito nets, sun and cold protection, a flare gun, sand ladders, Four Wheel Drive, etc.

Back in town there are a couple of places that are the surfer’s choice. The SIMA Surf Summit likes the Crowne Plaza Hotel and if you want to stay close to the surf in town, the Cabo Surf Hotel is right on the beach at Zippers: www.cabosurfhotel.com.

Or try the Las Olas Condos if you want to step up a little: http://www.sea-side.com/lasolas.htm

If you want to camp in town, check out the Brisa del Mar RV park.

Food
Bring a fishing pole and you won’t starve out on the East Cape. The fishing is great, and this is heaven for salt-water fly-fishermen.

Or stock up on beans and rice and tortillas and beer and Pringles and Pop Tarts and whatever else your heart desires in town, and live well.

In town, there are eateries from small taco stands to many-star restaurants.

Parking, access and directions
According to the www.loscabosguide.com: “Heading northeast out of San José del Cabo is an unpaved road leading to the area called The East Cape. This is one of the most scenic drives in Los Cabos, but better yet, the road passes dozens of beaches, most of which are deserted. In San José del Cabo, turn east at the intersection of Boulevard Mijares and Benito Juárez, across from the fire and police station. The turnoff is marked with various tourist signage and a sign pointing to "Pueblo La Playa" (commonly known as La Playita). In places this coast is wild and barren, but along the way are hidden secrets. Here, you will feel as though you are truly in old Baja, with solitary beaches in an endless array. Privacy on a number of them off the beaten track allows limitless discretion in dress...if you know what we mean. The wind is known to blow, and you must be careful to avoid deep sand sections while driving.”

Surf Shops
Click here for the website for Costa Azul surf shop, which promises “Everything you need for a perfect day of surfing,” and we believe them. This shop is just above Zippers and the place to go when you discover that wax you brought from the northern climes melts instantly on contact with Cabo sun and water temperatures.

Mike Doyle operates a surf school out of the Cabo Surf Shop, which also has everything you are going to need up east: www.cabosurfshop.com

Attractions
The East Cape is even more famous in the fishing and diving world than it is in the surfing world. Whether it’s flyfishing for roosterfish off the beach, or swimming out with a cannon of a speargun to shoot a sailfish between the eyes, this is the place.

Check out the www.eastcape.com website for the scoop on fishing up around in there.

There is also golfing, drinking, partying, or just kicking it by the pool with a funny drink and a book.
