Spot: Baja Malibu, MX

Places to stay
Most surfers will make Baja Malibu a day trip, but if you are sticking around, camping on the side of the road is a very bad idea in Baja. There's a KOA campground at the San Antonio exit just north of Baja Malibu, and several RV parks between Tijuana and Rosarito. Click here for more information on camping.

There are a number of hotels, condos, vacation rentals and hostels in Rosarito from dirty to Five Star. Click here for a list that recommends the Hotel La Fonda as a nice hotel with access to a nice beach, and “decent surfing out front.” The Hotel Calafia overlooks the surf break, and the Rosarito Beach Hotel is great if you hooked up with someone special.

There are also vacation rentals at Baja Malibu, if you want to make a weekend or a week of it. Click here

Food
Baja Malibu is about halfway between Tijuana and Rosarito Beach, so if you like Mexican food or seafood or lobster, you are in the right place. The closest place to Baja Malibu is Tecate Jack’s which has plenty of red hot salsa and ice cold beer. Drive a little south into Rosarito and there are more restaurants large and small, swank and local then you will ever know what to do with. For a partial list, click here.

Parking, access and directions
If you are crossing over from the US, don’t got at night and try to avoid looking like a mark in a Ford F 250 or an H3 Hummer. And don’t go late at night or in the early morning, because that is when a lot of the badness has been happening.

If you survive Tijuana, get onto the coastal toll road for Rosarito-Ensenada heading south. The exit for Baja Malibu is clearly marked with a sign for Tecate Jack’s. Parking at Baja Malibu is sketchy because if you park in the neighborhood your car will get keyed, or worse. One surfers suggests paying the security guard (at Tecate Jack’s?) $3-5 to watch your car, which is a small price for peace of mind.

Surf Shops
There are some surf shops in northern Baja, but the shops in America are better, so it’s best to stock up in the US of A before you leave.

Attractions
Do you like donkeys? Enough said about that. It’s always a mind-bender to cross a border and pass into a completely different world. The biggest attraction for this part of the world is partying, drinking, mingling, etc and there are any number of clubs for that.

Watching shootouts between cops and drug dealers is also becoming a popular attraction in this part of the world. Just south of Rosarito, movie buffs will find the Fox set where Titanic and other water movies were shot. Shopping for tequila with worms, fireworks and Cuban cigars is also worth doing. And flesh colored Jesus statues that glow in the dark.
