I was not surprised to read a report that Kelly Slater reported the error in tabulation of the world title point totals himself.
I would report that Kelly did the same thing as an amateur in the Eastern Surfing Association / Central Florida District when he was about 15 or 16 years old.
At that time, I as contest director, was impressed by three things. 1 Kelly always examined the score sheets of each judge 2 checked all the tabulations of the administration staff and 3 when an error was found, he simply pointed the error out and it was examined and corrected. In that case long ago, the error he pointed out was not to his favor, but to another competitor.
    Congratulations Kelly.

This is an excerpt from the 2008 book “For the Love” by Kelly Slater:

“The infrastructure of [Iraq] is beyond repair and children are dying in record numbers of cancers, starvation, and malnutrition as a result of the war we’ve waged in retaliation to 9/11. I don’t know about you, but I have yet to see the connection that [Iraq] had to attacking us…”

Speaking out for peace sometimes takes as much courage as dropping in at 10 foot Pipe.

How does a guy who’s so out there with his talent and income stay so balanced in his ethics, It’s really quite inspiring.

    Kelly has won me over.

My favorite surfer. The more i watch, the more I see. the more I see the more I admire. Previously I think I admired others because Kelly is just so beyond approach when it comes to emulating his talent? The lines he draws on waves are so consistently magical. The command he has over his attack? Masterful. Creative. Precise. Wow.

I respect him all the more for looking at the world with the same open intelligence. His political comments are spot on, and they are probably the real reason Sports Illustrated has ignored him, but who gives a flying f**k?

The NFL / NBA / MLB are lame compared to surfing. Surfing is the hardest sport on earth to master, and of those who have, he is the King.

Best of luck during the Pipe Masters Kelly!
