Great Contest. Wh could have asked for a better finish – Owen Win or Kelly Win = Surfing WAS REAL WiNNER TODAY. Although, wished they wouldn’t have called an interference against Julian, because he really didn’t interfere with Owen’s SCORING POTENTIAL! Other than that (& not counting Brett/Parko Mess-UP) awesome event!! KS10 (or 11) looked incredible on his thruster…

Julian = immense talent, good sportsman and shows heaps of courage in and out of the water. Really bad call regarding interference. Really bad!!!

Amazing consistency to Kelly’s performances. Every turn full-on and radical, and he has added in routine airs, which is the new point booster. It has been made clear that if you want to beat the Champ, you have to do so in a completely defined performance. In that respect, Owen is a new kind of Andy, and it is adding energy to the entire Tour. Actually, there’s a whole swarm of talent around Kelly now, and it’s incredible to watch the whole thing playing out.

BTW: I suggest holding back on the “claiming” thang; evidently the Judges do not like being “pushed” in front of thousands of people (adding in online melee). They have their own agenda. They are the ones who control who gets to wear the crown, and I think they want a very classy representative of surfing, as the sport gains broader, and wealthier sponsorship. Both Kelly and Owen have that class. Mick and Joel must expand their capacity to punt, or the new order will move past them, as talented as they may be on the wave’s face.

attn: bryce lowe-white — dude, it’s called the blacks slider in lightroom. or the channel mixer in photoshop. or hipstamatic. whatever, just add some more contrast to your b&w’s cause they’re horribly flat and look awful.

Evan & Kolohe “future threats ” ? sorry to burst your buble USA but they are no better than hundreds of kids all over Australia & Brazil . the hype will vanish once the tour moves off your shores .

  • Me

Owen’s not that good surfer. No power, bad style, worst cutback on the tour. Pure pivot type of surfing, no rails whatsoever. Stuff that the Hobgood’s been doing for years flared with some new bag of new tricks.

  • Bob

HA HA looks like Heitor is feeling that mom’s nip (slide 11) – classic optical illusion.

  • Sluggo

Oh my god, Bob: you’re right. Classic. Didn’t catch that before. He got it right on the tip, too. ;-)

  • Fernando

I think that KS first wave against H.Alves was ridiculously overscored.

Julian Wilson made a huge varial and got a 7. Slater does a single air and gets a 8. It doens´t make sense if you compair with other 8
.Every guy who did just a big single move didn´t get a big score.
Slater got an 8 for one aerial…… no sense.

Owen is hell to watch surf, no style, no power. Apparently style and flow have nothing to do with getting a score. But he’s alot easier on the eyes than Adriano and Jadson. Adriano is the biggest kook butt stick-out nasty ugly surfer in the world. why won’t the surfing world acknowledge the adriano surfs like 3rd world kook.

  • Fernando

Congrats to Surfer for recognizing that H Alves was fairly underscored.

I was glad to know that i was not the only one to think that.

Does someone else in this forum thinks like us?Share your opinion, please.

  • Mr Mr Jones

If you take a x ray of Kelly’s balls right now, you will probably see all five judges giving a lick on them.

  • RH

It wasn’t just Heitor that sometimes got underscored (which he did). The real problem seems to be that too many of the judges are kooks, who actually PREFER crossed up kook turns to smoothly leading (yet not overpreceding) one’s board through turns with one’s front arm, even if that’s done very powerfully. It would be one thing if they simply couldn’t differentiate, but PREFERRING kook turns means that the very same surfer can get underscored on his purest rides, and overscored on his hackiest. As for Parko being a “purist”, ha, HE has always done most of his frontside off-the-lips crossed up. Whereas, Julian’s backside off-the-lip reverse against Owen was perfectly UNcrossed-up, plus had NO RECOVERY whatsoever (as contrasted, say, to “recovery addict” Kolohe), and his board was never “flat” (underneath him) until the landing… and yet, even with a smooth little cutty and a fairly good backside reo thrown in, it only scored a 7.37… seemingly BECAUSE he didn’t flail. I’da given him a 10 because of outstanding execution… which would have put him right back in the heat (particularly if they had not somehow given Owen a higher score than 7.37 for his first wave). …In spite of an “interference” that probably shoulda been a “let ‘em play” NON-call. Also, Owen, who does seem like a great person out of the water, needs to learn to carve square off the bottom and blast, instead of doing half a bottom turn and then “yanking” the board into a relative lifeless (but vertical by golly!) encounter with the lip. It’s much more impressive when someone “corners” (a la motorcycle racing) hard out of a bottom turn into a blast (unless they didn’t corner hard INTO that bottom turn, as well). Make those turns square (i.e. fully carved), not lopsided, and there will be more true blast at the top.

how can surfer report on the last day and not mention the ridiculous inteference call that resulted in jules lost to owen?? (is the asp about progressive surfing, or progressive paddeling and hasseling?)
or parko calling wilson’s surfing “ugly” before being severely beaten by that same ugly surfing the next day?? this report is about as good as the surf was. ok/rideable/ readable.

  • Brasîl is Awful

    Every ‘surfer’ from Brazil flaps.

  • Daniel

To hear that “Kolohe and Evan are the biggest future threats” is way hilarious. I’m sorry for the once surfing powerhouse USA quickly losing ground to a new breed of amazing surfers from Brazil and Australia. I see this guy saying brazilian surfers “flap” as a loser-hater who must be clearly jealous…
Sad to see Heitor being underscored again just as he is in almost every tour event in the major league. Last year when he was failry judged in the Primes and 6 stars he simply clinched 3 victories.

  • http://www.oceanofideas.net Danny

Wilson was severely underscored both againt Mr Ugly himself (Parkonsen) and again Owen…what the fuck was that interference…Julian had the pick going for the right same as Owen was attending to take the left…. they wanted their freaking 3 times the same head record..that is why…Wilson was the best surfer in the entire contest and it is fine that he went up to the kook heads and told them “his peace of mind”…. this freaking show doesn’t deserve great surfers as Julian…he would take Kelly easily and owen as well…and parko should be suspended for describing the genius surfing of Wilson Ugly..WTF was he talking about..it is the most innovative and entertaining surfing ever…what he takes off people are holding their breath… get out of this freak show wilson…make movies do free surfing…you will be much richer, happier and most respectable surfer that you can ever be…those hassling will just let your wonderful looking hair to fall off..

STOP OVERSCORING SLATER – Slater gets 8s and 9s for doing turns. Although they were big hacks, no one else gets big scores unless they take to the air or do something really progressive – and let’s be clear, a turn followed by freeing the fins on the open face is not progressive – that shit was new in 1990. Even Knox, who does the biggest hacks on tour, can’t get above a 7.5 for power surfing – he can’t buy an 8. They should just give Slater the title and take the rest of the year off …yawn!

Freddy P said it best last year with his comment in reguards to Owen

I’m stuck here in the middle of the U,S,A. and don’t even get to watch surfing on the idiot box, been 30 years since I got to catch a wave. Surfing was not just a sport, it was a way of life. Dear GOD, bring waves to Missouri!!!
It sucks to leave the ocean.
