Change Offender

ARE YOU OFFENDED BY SURFERS CHANGING INTO THEIR WETSUITS IN PUBLIC?
Asked mostly at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, Ca., August 5th, 2001.
Jamie Johnson, 15
Student

"No, I'm not. We're at the beach, people are supposed to be semi-undressed here. Although walking around without shorts is not cool."
Alissa Withrow, 15
Student

"No. The human body is nice to look at and most surfers are toned, so there's nothing wrong with showing a little skin. But if They're purposely slashing people going 'Hey look at this', that would be offensive."
Trish Reynolds, 27
Mom

"If somebody took off their wetsuit and was like 'Look at me, I'm naked,' and gave me a frontal shot, then I might be offended. But I've never run into anybody like taht so I've never been offended."
Ron Leroy, 29
Recording Artist

" I really don't care as long as they're not walking around with their floppies hanging out. A quick change into their wetsuit is cool. I don't mind at all. Especially if they're girls."
Elan Pardee, 20
Student

"Of course not. Surfer boys can change around me whenever they want. I definitely wouldn't want to see them just strip down naked, but usually they have a towel or something so that's fine."
Don Ward, 72
retiree

"I don't think I'd be particularly offended, no. I guiess if they forgot to use a towel it'd be more like europe. And of course seeing the guys change in the buff would be worse than the ladies."
Kathy Withrow, 40
Medical Assistant

"There's nothing wrong with it. All the guys and girls I've seen changing have been very discreet about it. But when they forget their towel they need to at least go inside their car or behind a bush where no one can see."
Greg Velasquez, 32
Make-up Artist

"Not at all. In fact I forget my towel occasionally and have to charge the "Full Monty" to change into my suit. I guess some people might be pretty bummed to see that. But It's just one of those things you gotta do sometimes."

Jodi Harvey, 28
Counselor

"No, but a friend of mine actually got a ticket for indecent exposure. He was changing out of hie wetsuit on the side of the road without a towel. A cop drove by, saw his bare butt and gave him a ticket."

Katie Baker, 20
Student

"No. If it looks like they're not using a towel, I just look away. I think older people might be offended, but not the younger generation. Surfer's have a right to change in public as long as they're not doing it for the sole purpose of being vulgar."
Mary Lou, 31
Public Relations

"Yes. It was a horrible sight. It was heere at Steamer lane and I'm never coming back. He was very heavy and he was not using a towel. Even Being a french girl I was very shocked. He was very fat and very, very heavy.

Matt Garel, 30
Model

"Heck no. According to my wife, 'If you don't change in public with a towel wrapped around your boys, you're not a real surfer.' I make here cringe when I pull my wetsuit over my board shorts. But lately, she's been giving me the thumbs up 'cause I've been using a towel and disrobing in front of whoever wants to watch."
