28| John John Florence Birthday: October 18, 1992 Hometown: Pupukea, Hawaii John John's has finally graduated out of the grommet division, but considering his potential, talent, star power and proven appetite for heavy surf, he still measures up nicely against guys more than six years his senior. Due in large part to his unflinching reputation in maxing Haleiwa and seething Pipe, his performance in the Triple Crown (the youngest competitor ever to do so), and his multitude of other contest successes, John John is one of the premier young surfers in the world on any scale. Aside from his incredible support network, and being somewhat taken under wing by both Kelly Slater and Pete Johnson, he's diversifying his portfolio enough to keep things interesting and fun. For starters, thanks to Brock Little, he's picked up stunt work on the set of the new HBO surf series, John From Cincinnati. If he's not careful he may just be the next Jimmy Slade. 29| Tonino Benson Birthday: November 25, 1989 Hometown: Kailua, Hawaii Tonino Benson, the 2005 Under 16 ISA world champ, has been able to enjoy a relatively pressure-free environment in which to develop. Unlike places such as Southern California or Australia's Gold Coast, the burden of the surf industry does not hang over one's head on the Big Island. But like Shane Dorian proved, if you want to make it there, you've got to work for it. Whiling away his days in the mediocre waves of Banyan's, the same place Dorian came of age, this goofy-footer possesses an extremely diverse array of talents, including his light-footed, lightening fast ability to make crappy waves look better than they really are-something he's been working extremely hard on in recent months. “Little Tony,” as his name directly translates, has already traveled extensively, and palns to spend extensive time on the road this year, including trips with guys like Bobby Martinez and Rob Machado. With company like that, good things are bound to happen. |
