Surfrider Foundation Launches World Water Day Site

Group Seeks To Encourage Audiences To Reduce Their Water Footprint

San Clemente, CA (February 22, 2011)-In recognition of the 18th annual World Water Day on March 22nd, the Surfrider Foundation is launching a new microsite, calling upon people to share their water-saving tips, and offering a one day-only membership special.

Founded in 1993 by the United Nations, this global observance highlights the need for the care and management of the world’s water resources. This year’s theme, Urban Water Usage, highlights the ongoing challenges we face as urban populations continue to grow.

“With an estimated one out of two people on the planet now living in cities, the pressure to meet our freshwater needs is at a breaking point,” said Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “From supply, to sanitation, to usage, our infrastructure and resource management practices have pushed many areas past peak water capability. This is not only affecting public health and welfare, but also causing significant damages to our marine environments.”

The good news is that we can all reduce our water footprint by making small changes in our daily routines like fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, washing only full loads and planting climate adapted plants. Not only will these actions help keep our oceans, waves and beaches clean, they could potentially save us hundreds of dollars each year.

On World Water Day, the Surfrider Foundation is calling upon people to reduce their water footprint and share their water-saving tips by posting a photo at http://wwd.surfrider.org. In addition to inspiring people to make small changes in their daily lives that will impact our coastal water quality, the website will provide people with a variety ideas as to how they can do something, no matter where they live that will ultimately affect our coastal water quality.

Additionally, the Surfrider Foundation will host a one-day World Water Day membership and donation special on March 22nd where supporters can join or renew their membership, or make a donation and receive a limited-edition reusable World Water Day bottle.

We may also make substantial water sparing by adapting what we eat (70% of our water footprint) and what we buy.
