NSSA will present the “Mayor's Cup” in the return of it's Nationals to “Surf City

The NSSA Founders vision returns to it’s roots at the Huntington Beach Pier.

In the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s(NSSA) return to Huntington Beach and it’s formative roots, the NSSA will inaugurate the “Mayor’s Cup” starting a new tradition in “Surf City”.

The perpetual trophy with be housed annually in the Huntington Beach City Council Chambers and the Mayor herself, Cathy Green will present the trophy on Saturday afternoon July 3rd of the  July of 4th of July weekend at the event site on the Southside of the Huntington Beach Pier at 4.00p.m.

With an exciting field of scholastically eligible surfers from around the nation competing starting Tuesday in “Surf City”, The “Mayor’s Cup” will be presented to the Mens and Women’s Champions of the 2010 NSSA Nationals presented by Nike 6.0.

Who will be the first have their names engraved on the cup.

The NSSA has come a long way since 1978, when four educators and a bank vice-president got together to put competitive surfing in the US on a new course and formed the National Scholastic Surfing Association(NSSA).

Tom Gibbons, Laird Hayes, Rob Hill, John Rothrock and Chuck Allen had the vision of melding education and surfing and formed the organization and held a “Summer Championships” at the Southside of Huntington Beach and later in the year the first Nationals.

That first Nationals was won my Mark McDandel of South Carolina but also in that final was soon to be inducted Surfing Walk of Famer later this summer, Rick “Rockin’ Fig” Fugnetti who is still to competing in the senior divisions some thirty plus years later.
