Random Happenings in surf for the Week of August 22

| posted on August 26, 2011

Between terrifying moments of Billabong Pro Tahiti webcast-viewing this weekend, have a gander at these strange items that graced the surf world this week.

The Most Awesome Video on the Interweb
It might just be the best surf movie in existence.

Oily Naiads
Surfrider Foundation Europe recently released a calendar to remember the catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico last year. From the press released: “We have a created a calendar with photos of young naiads covered in oil…This calendar, which will be offered to all members of Surfrider Foundation Europe, is also designed to help recruit new volunteers.” Preferably young naiad volunteers.

The Power of 140-Character Protests
When Bruce Irons was defeated in the Trials at the Billabong Pro Tahiti and then wasn’t granted a wildcard, the Twittersphere blew up in a hash-tag revolt. “#putBruceinChopes!” they cried. It worked. Event organizers granted him an expression session heat between the semis and finals. Twitter, making dreams come true since 2006.

Jamie O'Brien, the leader of the Twitter revolt.

An “Interview” with “Layne Beachley”
In this episode of Stuck Between a Wok and a Hard Place, South African smart ass Warwick Wright sits down with a very reticent Layne Beachley. Note: If you’re sensitive to sexism, don’t watch this.

SUP Goes Alternative
The future of retro? Let’s hope not.

Synchronized Surfing
In a press release this week, it was announced that on the weekend of October 1 and 2 surfers in Cape Town, South Africa, will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the “most surfers riding the same wave,” a record which they set at 110 in 2009.

Pretty much like the average day in Southern California.

Great Surf Copywriting
This week’s Living Social deal for San Diego featured a surf lesson package where you will be taught how to “hang ten like an aquatic orangutan” and “what to do if a 28-foot rip curl comes up magically from behind.” A valuable package indeed: both are skills I’m fairly certain no one has yet to master.

Patent Pending
The Wax Wingman. Because everyone needs a wingman…for their wax? The inventor explains: it’s “a simple yet effective way to maintain your wax just like new.” It’s like a little neoprene man-purse. “Respect the wax.” Yes, respect it.
