Random Happenings in Surf from the Week Ending March 20

If you’ve been paying attention at all, you’ve heard the big news of the week. The rest of the obscure surf happenings of the week can be found here.

The Next Chapter for Finless?
The world’s first alaia surf contest took place at the Noosa Festival of Surfing in Australia. San Clemente’s Christian Wach took home top honors. He says he’s going to auction off the Tom Wegener finless fiberglass alaia he won on his blog and donate the proceed to the Red Cross in Japan. In other unconventional competition news, the event also has a Senior SUP division.

Man vs. Machine
In the realm of near misses and close calls, Jason Palokow narrowly dodged a falling Jet Ski while windsurfing massive Jaws earlier this week. “I saw the ski having problems and the guy was yelling at me,” said Polakow. “As I dropped down the face I saw him out of the corner of my eye diving off the ski. I knew the ski was going to go over the falls, but I was already committed so I just had to try and get around before it came down on me.”

And This Week in Alana News…
Rip Curl announced the release of “Alana’s Closet,” Alana Blanchard’s new bikini line (the kind made of Lycra and spandex, not the other kind).
