The second leg of the Vans Triple Crown, the World Cup of Surfing, is underway at Sunset Beach. While John Florence erased any World Title implications over a month ago, he does have the chance to add an impressive tally to his 2016 resume: An Eddie victory, a WSL Title, and a Triple Crown, a hat trick no pro has accomplished.

But the 10,000-point ‘QS event is a dogfight, not just for those with pride on the line, but for ‘CTers on the brink of elimination as well as for hungry qualifiers looking to make a statement. Frederico Morais, who barely fell short in his Hawaiian Pro final with Florence, is a former finalist at Sunset. Rookie Ryan Callinan is ninth on the ‘QS rankings and needs to strong performance at Sunset to boost his qualification stock. Everybody’s got something to fight for, and it all anticipates the year’s final event: The Pipe Masters.
