The Kelly Slater Resolution

| posted on May 25, 2010

Apparently Kelly Slater has caught the eye of the US Congress as a resolution meant to honor him recently passed the House. Led by Hawaiian Congresswoman (D) Mazie Hirono and Florida’s (R) Bill Posey, the pair introduced a bipartisan resolution to honor Slater for his achievements in the sport. In all, 60 house members cosponsored the Kelly Slater Resolution.

“Slater has worked hard to master a sport that so many have tried but so few have actually been able to conquer,” said Congressman Posey who represents Slater’s home town of Cocoa Beach, FL. “His world championship record is impressive and is certainly worthy of recognition.”

“Kelly Slater’s skill and achievements have earned him many fans in Hawaii, the birthplace of surfing,” said Congresswoman Mazie Hirono. “Two decades after winning his first professional surf contest, we in the islands are proud of our part-time resident as he continues to add to his string of successes out on the waves.”

  • cliffs

While I think this is very cool and an honor, aren’t there more pressing things for our legislature to be working on?

  • cocoa

Exactly Cliffs…look how are world honors a surfer when we have a spill messing up our water……r we that stupid ..SORRY to our soldiers….booooo to Kelly

  • Surfer Paul

To honor him is to honor our surfing environment The Ocean, remember BP!! And our history of the sea, while we still have it…..

  • zach

In honor of Kelly Slater every surfer should just quit surfing. Long live the US Congress ?

  • Dalton

It is EXACTLY during times such as these that we should be praising positive people and occurences, it’s too bad stories like don’t make the National news. This is an unbelievable achievement for a surfer and congratulations to Mr. Slater and to Florida. What have you guys done lately?

  • Surfer

Hey Cocoa what’s up with boooing Kelly? What have you done with your life? Why is it Kelly’s fault he got this recognition? What are you doing about the oil spill? What do our soldiers have to do with this? Get off your computer and go volunteer to help clean it up. You ARE STUPID!!!

Oh and Zach I agree. haha

  • Greg

let’s not be naive here folks. all this is is a push by a politician to win favor with his constituents in whatever white-trash town it is Slater’s from. An nice PR moment, nothing more.

  • zach

While Obama destroys America, Kelly RIP’s – -Beware the NEW surfboard tax the Progressives in Congress will want for your next shred-sled ! (Surfer; – – if everyone would just quit surfing Kelly could remain World Champ until the day he dies ! RIP Kelly)

  • MIk

Wow. What a great achievement for Kelly, and for the sport / art of surfing as a whole. He deserves national and international recognition for his talents as a 9X World Champion surfer, and especially for the way that he has carried himself all of these years. I’d like to thank the Congressman and Congresswoman who wrote this Bill of Recognition. America needs more leaders who praise positive achievements, and also recognize our link to the environment. BTW: Comments by “Zach” that Obama is destroying the USA are incredibly naive. Bush left office after starting an illegal war for oil, deregulated banks and investment procedures, and also running up a massive debt to China for Iraq war expenses… And you blame Obama? The Gulf oil-spill disaster is the shared irresponsibility of many generations of USA officials who allowed oil drilling in the Gulf, but did not put in place a fleet of emergency response equipment and personnel to handle problems that might occur. To shoulder the blame on Obama is childish. However I do agree that he should have taken the response out of BP’s hands immediately. BP should have its ass sued off for what now appears to be criminally negligent practices.

  • gene

What a unique individual and accomplished surfer, this sport deserves recogition in usa and now Slater has achieved that as a usa
world champion several times. He’s a role model, hero and very talented/gifted sufer which has lifted the image of surfers /surfing
to honor of a resolution, never thought I live to see this day ! Nice Ride Kelly you made all who surf feel/know this sport is a equal
now with the honor bestowed in a resolution in Congress, been long time coming .

  • g-ret

I just want to see Kelly at the white house in trunks with Obama after winning his 10th…..bu sey “bout time there’s a rippa shredda in da big house brudddah!!”

  • rj

Zach was funny until he said something stupid.
So…..back to Kelly………..Surfer Paul is exactly correct, for Congress to honor Kelly for his achievements is to honor our Mother Ocean and increase awareness of what is happening, the good and the bad, which both can only improve on our current situation.
    Again, congrats to Kelly.

  • Surfer of the Ocean

Kelly is a model like a person, and like a surfer, by far the best competitive surfer of the modern times. The KS Resolutión is a good new, for the sport and for the model Kelly represents. Not only the USA surfers, but the entire World Surf Comunity who believes that KS reflects in some way the beatifull that the Ocean gives to us, are proud of him.
Ocean and waves are over countries and flags. The same wave breaks over Teaupoo and Lowers, Mundaka and Cocoa Beach, Jeffreis and Margaret River. And the same surfer can ride it, just like Kelly does. Is not a question of what are the letters in your passport, or the colour of the flag. Is just a question of the Mother Natire and the Waves movin´all over the Ocean and the World, ignoring the frontiers, just lookin´for the sand and the reef.
For all the non USA citizens or surfers, is a good new the KS resolution. We are not USA-Americans, but we are surfers too, Just as KS is.
Congrats to Kelly, and get the 10th, for sure!

  • Ryan

Bill Posy should get his facts right. Freida Zamba was the first world champ from Florida not Kelly Slater. Just one of many inaccurate statements in his lame speech

  • Dan

    Slater for President

  • Moche

I´m from South America and I want to congratulate Kelly for this recognition as an individual because of his carrier as a “Pro” surfer and for the kind of person and sportsman he is, he seems to me as a good human been and it´s important for the sport because for example in this part of the world wee surfers steel have this “cliché” of junkies, and it´s hard to change this perception. Kelly is a good role model for younger surfers and for the community (not the only one, lots of free surfers too, as Laird for example).

  • mandingo

    what exactly did they pass?

  • sashimisteve

go bru. you deserve a lot more, but what the heck. shine on and do the ten.
as for the negative people who’ve been posting on this, get a life. the cup is half full, not half empty.

  • Larry

did they mention the part where he knocked up some chick and left a little girl to grow up without her dad? Yeah, that’s a real role model alright.

  • Ace Cool

What about me ? I swam around an island in a speddo !!

  • Ace Cool

  • jeff

thought people would be a lot happier about this – this says good things for surfing and the future of our beaches as far as the government caring about keeping them clean and preserving surf spots. everyone cries that surfing doesn’t get mainstream cred then when it does you all hate. like a snotty teenager who wonders why his band isn’t on mtv then when it is cries that it sold out. losers.

  • cliffs

Jeff, you really think the gov. cares about our beaches and keeping them clean? Further, I am not sure why any surfer (besides Pros or industry types) would want surfing to go full-on mainstream…although it sort of already has.

  • zach

yepper surf dudes and dudettes – you next “magic” ride will cost an unimaginable fortune. Now our “illustrious” leader Obama has shut down oil exploration for the foreseeable future. There goes the resin needed for your next “shred-sled” ! Invest now or forever hold your piece ?

  • Larry

    piece of what, zach?

  • christo

So what does an Official Surf Ambassador do anyway?

Here’s one for you: H. Res. 1347 – Honoring the workers who perished on the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana, extending condolences to their families, and recognizing the valiant efforts of emergency response workers at the disaster site.

  • zach

Unless, like Kelly , you have a Congressional “Medal of Achievement” you will not be allowed to surf in America, or territories owned by the United States. So it will just be Kelly and Obama going on surf trips in Air Force One ! All you need to tag along is a VOTE for Obama !

  • zach

Kelly should take Obama to Chopes and launch him into a “BOMB” !

  • Says Just

Rhetoric is a slippery slope, Zach. Time to out the beer down and take a nap…

  • zach

Dawn patrol “says” better wake up – – it’s 6′ and glassy !

  • andyman1

Wow Zach, what are you say, 19, maybe 20 years old? Since when is 8:40 a.m. the dawn patrol? As for a surfboard tax, how about you go to a local shaper and hand him some hard earned money and get your next stick? Say we do shut down offshore drilling. That’s fine that we don’t have the needs to make the glass and resin that pollute the environment. How bout we start making surfboards out of plants and bamboo. Can’t happen you say….. IT ALREADY IS. Ever since Clark Foam has shut down, People have been thinking outside the box and have been creating boards that don’t harm the environment and that don’t depend on the oil companies that YOU are supporting by your comments. As for Kelly and his award, He deserves it and is an ambassador of the ocean whether people like it or not, Cynics never win and Positivity is contagious.

  • zach

andy; keep living in your “Made in China” world and enjoy bicycling to uppers and then home in Santa Ana. Give up all your mags printed in “China” and join the Obama/Mao surprise awaiting you sooner rather than later. Shape your own “alaia” w/o electricity and enjoy your day at the beach if you don’t use any fossil fuels and pay homage to Kelly your idol. So what if “judges” awarded the golden boy another trophy. Disfrute la nueva California ?

  • andyman1

Well Zach, I’d rather be part of the solution than the problem. Try thinking positive in life and it’ll get better for you, I promise. You probably wonder why your always treated so poorly, why you have trouble in life. It’s because you look for the negatives in life. Like big business and the Oil Industry you so adamantly support, that’s part of the problem. Bringing in Obama and china into this debate is just a desperate attempt by an uninformed and uneducated person grasping at a losing point. Stay cynical and see where it gets you, nowhere. I don’t live in Santa Ana and I don’t surf uppers, and yes, my friends are making boards that integrate bamboo and plant bio resin into the process. There is a way to help better the environment, you just have to dig a little deeper to make it happen. Best of luck to you Zach, and I truly mean that.

  • zach

Andy, I couldn’t agree less with your assumptions. That being said, I also wish you luck in your bio-endeavors. Keep your eyes and ears open and maybe one day you too will be able to have traveled the world, surfed uncrowded waves and become successfully retired. Pay attention to your surroundings – your survival depends on it. Sorry to disappoint you but you know what “they” say about people who “assume” ! ( I don’t “adamantly support” the Oil industry but I still drive a SUV) When you invent the next “source” of energy let us all know. Everyone will want to invest if it’s not windmills and solar panels. Z

  • Steve

I also look for the negatives – it helps me avoid them. And it’s gotten my quite far. Andy’s a kook.

  • ROB

Politics and surfing…… or any sport…… it is worth recognizing the good….. and Kelly is an AMERICAN icon for a GLOBAL sport….

  • Vicky

I agree with Rob, Kelly is an amazing surfer. Way to go Slater!!!

  • Surfercrit
