Flor-bama Surfer Sterling Spencer Represents The South Coast

What exactly is the South Coast? It may not be America’s surfing epicenter, but the Gulf Coast occasionally snags solid swell and guys like Sterling Spencer relish the opportunity. With a subtle Southern drawl and a house within earshot of Alabama, Sterling sat down with SURFER during an exclusive trip for Billabong’s much-anticipated film Still Filthy to dispel some Gulf Coast myths.

What’s it like growing up as a surfer within ten miles of the Alabama border?

Growing up in Flor-bama seems pretty normal. There’s a local crew, and everyone surfs. It was pretty painful sometimes when I couldn’t travel, and it would get really flat in the summer; I’d go a month and a half without surfing. It would drive me crazy so I would skate a lot. But there’s a full-on surf scene there.

East Coast or West Coast?

South Coast because I don’t live on either.

So you just bought a house. That’s cool.

Yeah, I figured I’d make an investment when I can. Prices are low; Buy low. Sell high.

If you had to listen to two artists for the rest of your life, who would they be?

That’s easy. Neil Young and Rihanna.

What are your goals for the coming year?

Get famous and shred harder.

If you had to ride one board for the rest of your life what would it be?

It would be a 5’ 10” three-fin thruster. Hmm…I guess I’d get older so it would be a magic board that evolves with my weight and size. Is that cheating?

Yes. What’s the last book you read?

The Bible. That’s the only book I read.

What’s your favorite movie?

Three Amigos. Steve Martin, Martin Short and Chevy Chase are awesome. We need more Chevy Chase.

Give us a parting quote.

“It appears we are looking at the ocean.”

Look for more of Sterling in Billabong’s upcoming film Still Filthy!
