A 19-year-old bodyboarder was attacked and killed by a shark in Santa Barbara this morning. According to a report on CNN, Lucas McKaine Ransom of Romoland, California, was bitten in the left leg by a shark estimated to be “14 to 20 feet in length” while bodyboarding at Surf Beach near Vandenberg Air Force Base with another friend. He was later pronounced dead by first responders.

Ransom’s friend and other people on the beach witnessed the attack. According to a statement by Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jason Grossini posted on the LA Times‘ website, “He [Ransom’s friend] saw his friend go under for a brief moment and knew something was wrong,” Grossini said.

The article went on to say that “the friend and the witnesses helped Ransom get to shore. Ransom suffered a massive wound to his left leg…he was pronounced dead at the scene by personnel from Vandenberg AFB fire department.”

It’s not immediately known what type of shark killed Ransom but authorities have said that Surf Beach and two surrounding beaches will be closed for 72 hours.

A human being dies and Zach thinks Surfer should be publishing a story about a drunk Aussie getting arrested? Who gives a shit? Wake up Zach. Condolences to the family. Terrible news.

surfer doesn’t bother dragging the bros from the bro industry into the mud… just worry about the big reactionary stories… legs bitten off couldn’t have happened at a better time to dampen the coleburn story.
