Save Trestles Again
OC Board of Supervisors oppose push to make Trestles a historical landmark

Trestles and its surrounding breaks have obviously had a big impact on surfing in California, which is why the Surfrider Foundation is pushing for the stretch of coastline from Uppers to San Onofre to be added to the National Register of Historic Places. Joining the registry would mean additional protection for the area against any detrimental change, be it a toll road or some other form of imposing development.
The county is against adding Trestles to the list, and the Chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, John Moorlach, has been vocal in his opposition. “I’m having a tough time swallowing the request to make Trestles a member of this effort to preserve national treasures,” says Moorlach on his blog. “I’m a fan of the Surfrider Foundation, but my cynical side tells me the application is a cute move to avert a connection with the I-5 Freeway and the toll road system.”
To prove that he isn’t the callous villain in this debate, Moorlach assured the public that he respects California historical landmarks, and has even gone so far as to take photos of many of them. “If you sincerely wish to see my seven or eight albums, I will be more than happy to show them to you,” Moorlach offers.
On February 8, the debate will go to the State Historical Resources Commission who will decide whether or not Trestles’ nomination will move forward. Click here for more information.

Yup. Trying to save trestles with surf rider is a joke. I remember when they went to court last time they had a bunch of petruli smelling dread locked scrubby looking trolls saying stuff like “dude the road will ruin the quality of the wave man”. It looked like Spacoli up there. You think some rich fucks from OC really care?If you want to save that spot get lawyers in suits who look like they what theyre talking about. I really hope they don’t change trestles it’s a total goon magnet and keeps my spot empty.

You don’t need a cynical side to see that…
I really hope that they save this place, not because I’ll ever surf it, but it would be a shame for such an popular wave to be lost. But does it really merit historic status?

Save Trestles. This place and places like it are treasures. You can’t just make them in the factory. They are one of a kind and we should put them ahead of our short term interests. These places mean more than money!

Isn’t Trestles technically in San Diego County? Can someone break down the jurisdiction for me/us?

It would be interesting to see where John Moorlach stands on the Toll Road issue, judging by his comment, I’d say he’s for it. There are rumors of council members being investors in construction interests involved with the completion of the Toll Roads, which seems like a blatant conflict of interest.

Would this be the same Surfrider foundation that failed to oppose, and indeed supported, the thirty hive hundred foot tall windmills on oahus north shore that are the biggest visual pollution in hawaii is history? Surfrider can kiss my ass now and forever

Wow. I’ve never herd so many people getting but hurt for someone ripping on trestles. I thought there would be a little more material then what’s here.

So, Mr. Wacker – your home break would thus be, err, Trail 6?
Just trying to understand your bitterness. And isn’t your last name spelled “Whacker?”

Why is a rep from Orange County having a say in the matter. Doesn’t trestles sit on the north end if San Diego county. Moorlack should stay on his home turf and let the place be. Maybe we can get green peace to step in.

Well that escalated quickly.

@richardwhacked: Reactionaries like you are exactly why politicians like this numbskull Moorlach get elected. You’re both out of touch with reality. Trestles is a surf icon. It should be preserved. If their are too many kooks out there, I am absolutely certain that you are just another one of the same.

Trestles is a special spot. It’s what a Southern California South swell is all about.

January 8, 2013 3:19 pm
@ Richard wacker – “Monster Energy Drink presents: Trestles” they can even charge kids to use the place.
January 8, 2013 3:08 pm
Fuck trestles. I hope the army corps of engineers cements that whole fucken zone. That soulless place should be wiped off the map. I’ve never seen so many goons, transplants, fun boards, longboards, brazillians, pro hoes, cameras, web cams, wanna be pros with gay stickers on their boards and pussies before in my life. Uppers lowers where ever that place represents the death of surfing. I’m surprised a corporation hasn’t bought the place. Wait they do every year for some gays ass contests. At least it keeps a lot of kooks away from my break!!
