DEE WHY, New South Whales (Wednesday, September 30, 2009) – Stop No. 3 of 7 on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Tour is underway this morning with the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic in two-to-three foot (1 metre) conditions at Dee Why in New South Whales with sunny skies and light offshore winds. The opening day of competition will see the completion of Round 1.
“We’re going to start Round 1 at 8:30am this morning,” Matt Wilson, Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic Contest Director, said. “We’ve got a sunny day with offshore winds and plenty of options for competitors out at Dee Why. The great thing about Dee Why is that there is the point and a few beach breaks, so we’re going to open up the entire area to the surfers this morning and plan on completing Round 1.”
After a long break in the ASP Women’s World Tour season, the girls on tour will be hungry to get the rest of their year off on the right foot with a strong opening round performance. Today’s action will include event wildcard and defending Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic Champion Tyler Wright (AUS), 15, reigning two-time ASP World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 21, and current ASP World No. 2 Silvana Lima (BRA), 24, who is coming off of her maiden ASP World Tour victory.
The first heat of the day will see ASP World No. 8 Rebecca Woods (AUS), 25, ASP World Tour rookie Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 18, and seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion Layne Beachley (AUS), 37, take to the water and battle for direct advancement through to Round 3.
