Gifts and Glory at the 11th Annual Wahine Surfing Classic, Sponsored by Rip Curl
There’s that old phrase that “practice makes perfect’. If you mix that in with, “make sure you do it where you’re competing,” you’ll have a clear view as to who won, and why, at this year’s 11th annual Wahine Surfing Classic.
This event is one of surfing idol China Uemura’s two babies that he proudly stands over to make sure the girls, ladies, and moms have the time of their life. Summer’s in full tilt on Hawaii’s south shores and Waikiki opened up her arms with plenty of surf and sun for everyone.
“The morning’s high tide drained so fast it looked
like a third of O’ahu was
out of the water by noon”
Local Honolulu girl Crystal Dzigas won the pro-am division. By putting the extra training time in the water under last week’s full moon, she knew where to sit through the radical tides. The morning’s high tide drained so fast it looked like a third of O’ahu was out of the water by noon. The waves were shifting like crazy, but Crystal had the whole thing figured out.
Junior Girls division winner Megan Godinez came in second in the pro-am, so she knew what was going on too. As a huge surprise to Megan, China announced that he had a $1,000 sponsorship check for to make sure she’d have a crack at the mainland events this summer. Megan also received $800 for her second place pro-am position, so she’ll have no problem handling that excess baggage charge at the airport!
Proceeds from China’s annual events go to great causes and the Wahine Classic will support the Sex Abuse Treatment Center of the Kapi`olani Medical Center.
That’s just another definition of the word ‘aloha’ in Hawaii.
