HOW IT SHOULD BE: Lowers Lights Up For Nike 6.0

| posted on July 22, 2010

This is how Lowers is supposed to be (if you’re a contest surfer). It’s sunny. There’s an overhead south swell spinning through the water. And some of the world’s best surfers are weaving their way across peeling lefts and rights happy to be doing what they’re doing. After a week of sub-par conditions, it’s certainly a nice welcome mat at the doorstep of the Nike 6.0 Lowers Pro.

Adriano De Souza continued on his tear through the tourney with an eighteen point heat victory over the comeback kid, Richie Collins, and local fixture, Tanner Gudauskas.

The San Clemente native represented a solid contingent of locals who dropped heats in what brother Pat called, “the massacre.”

With Chris Ward, Nate Yeomans, Shane Beschen, and Mike Losness bowing out of competition, Pat G. remains the last local standing.

“I’m just having fun being home, and it’d be great to win,” said Pat.

“I think [growing up here] helps, for sure, but there are so many good surfers out there that though you never know. Someone like Freddy goes out there and lights it up and it’s anyone’s game.”

Carlsbad product and World Tour charger, Taylor Knox, burned through a close heat today, besting Mike Losness in the final moments.

“I barely made my heat, but I’m sure it happens to everybody,” said Knox. “I’m really hoping that I get a really solid, consistent heat.”

As for the conditions, the competitors couldn’t have been happier. Sitting out in the lineup, it seemed like the jerseys and horns were miles away.

Said Knox, “It’s so good. I’m just happy to go surfing out there. When the waves are this good it’s not even like a contest.”
