Slater’s Midseason Breakdown
The 11x world champ speaks his mind on where the ratings stand halfway through the year
If ever there were someone to break down the World Tour ratings, it’s the surprisingly unbiased 11x world champ Kelly Slater. Heading into Jeffreys Bay, Slater is ranked third overall behind Gabriel Medina and Michel Bourez, both of whom have event wins under their belt, while The Champ is winless. However, both already have throwaway events in their scoreline going into a stretch of the Tour where Slater is a heavy favorite. “If I were to figure out how to win two of the next three events and get a third good result I would then be in the driver’s seat,” explains Slater. With a dozen wins at Jeffreys Bay, Teahupoo, and Lower Trestles over the course of his career, it’s by no means a stretch that he could jump to the front of the ratings in the near future. All in all, if Slater remains consistent over the back half of the year and wins one or two events, an unprecedented 12th world title seems inevitable.
