Irons Family Statement

| posted on May 21, 2011

Contrary to what was stated in a May 19th email sent out by Tarrant County Assistant District Attorney Ashley Fourt to members of the media, the Irons family did not request the extension of a motion to block the release of the autopsy results for Andy Irons due to be released by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner today.

A lawyer in Dallas, operating without authorization from the family, made a unilateral decision to request a delay on behalf of the family as a way to provide sufficient time for the 10-page toxicology report to be translated into laymen’s terms and prevent the risk of its being misconstrued or misunderstood. Additionally, his intentions were to provide the family a moment to accept the final cause of Andy’s death.

Unfortunately, this delay has now caused a firestorm of media speculation about the intentions of Andy’s family. We would like the media and public to know that we have been anticipating the results for six months and were prepared to greet the release of this information with honesty and forthrightness.

We would also like to address two quotes attributed to Andy’s wife Lyndie that were recycled from six months ago and reprinted in a story today on OutsideOnline as if they were current. Firstly, Mrs. Irons has long regretted her previous remark about the truth “tarnishing Andy’s brand,” which she attributes to her confusion and grief at the time of learning of her husband’s passing. Secondly, Mrs. Irons’ quote that she believes the autopsy results will “contradict the rumors [of] a drug overdose” does not reflect Lyndie Irons’ or the family’s beliefs today. We know that Andy’s life and death were tainted by drugs and are ready to accept the Medical Examiner’s findings.

The family has been prepared to finally learn the cause of Andy’s death and is saddened and angered to wait longer, as it was not by our choice or design. We would also like the media and public to know that Andy’s sponsors, including Billabong, have played no part in this extension and are not trying to protect Andy’s image or earnings in any way, and we hope that these inaccurate claims will cease.

The family is still anxiously awaiting the results of the autopsy and toxicology report and will comment further, and with all due honesty, once it is provided to us.

“Firestorm of media speculation”… Anyone else sick and tired of the so called media? Who’s business is it of our anyways? Even if she were the one requesting for more time, it’s entirely her right. She lost her young husband in a shocking way, not to mention it occurred right before the birth of her son. Who in their right mind could be in their right mind with all that going on. The last thing I’d imagine she’d want are stupid-a** photographers and news cameras getting in her business adding more unwanted stress to a situation. Her and the family’s needs should far trump any “need” the anonymous public feels it is entitled to. It is none of our freakin’ business.

Damn. I don’ t really want to know the truth. I was cool with the dengue fever explanation. Just leave it at that. It’s over. No need to drag Andy’s memory through all this. We grew up in the surf scene. We can fill in the details on our own.

Does it matter.. Loss of a family member, is heavy enough..

End of the day AI is still the man and always will be.

Don’t be fooled by the “Family response”. It is carefully crafted, not a genuine personal statement.

And the Lawyer seeking the delay, who does he work for? If not the Iron’s family, then who would contract someone to create a delay? Adding the innocuous reference that the clothing company that did EVERYTHING it could to disguise the death originally now has no interest in this equation is insulting. That sentence in the above statement is contradictory of itself.

Billabong released a death diagnosis that was patently false, ahead of the story as it broke. Billabong is concerned with Andy’s branding.

How crass and shameful is their Bob Marley campaign. Is Celebrity Death the future of their marketing? Did Bob surf?

    Release the results

Strealy and Mike, investigating Andy’s cause of death in no way diminishes his effect on all of the people who admired his surfing. His “legacy” is not at stake.
The public is misled by corporate interests in every aspect of our lives. Business can conduct itself ethically without all the subterfuge. Why won’t anyone ask Billabong to explain their unusual role in the announcement of Andy’s death? Who created the dengue fever diagnosis and who pulled the trigger for the clothing company to manage their athletes death and subsequent autopsy delay? The narrative shouldn’t even be about Andy anymore, it should center around the devious machinations of his sponsor and the manipulations through the surviving family.
Andy was a great surfer and humble guy. No sticker on his board eclipses Andy’s lasting influence.

All I ask is: Has anybody seen an ad with A.I. in it lately? Be in Bong/Von/Kustom/or any of the other brands that used his surfing awesomeness to make a buck and sell a short/sunglass/shoe/whatever… That is the true tragedy – he is gone, NOT forgotten (unless of course you are in marketing then he is nowhere to be found in pages of surf mags) p.s. I could be wrong and he will pop up in future issues of mags, but as far as USA mags go – where did A.I. go? …Lost had ads running with title “Where’s Wardo?” well I say: “where’s Andy? I miss seeing a shot of THE MAN @ Pipe/Desert Point/Shipsterns/P-Pass/Fiji/Chopes/Wiamea/ANYWHERE – Dude ripped so hard and now his ripping is reserved for Surf Mag Issues BEFORE (or immediately after) His UNTiMELY DEATH. Bring back the A.I. pics – you know you got some. Fark, his surfing might help inspire the kiddies to put it on rail AND charge for charging’s sake. Bring back the rising sun trunks – sell em & Donate ALL proceeds to Wife Lindy and Axel. I’d by a pair just to support – AND I DON’T EVEN LiKE B-BONG! just my 2 bits…
