One event before the end of the 2012 ASP Women’s World Tour, Stephanie Gilmore clinched her fifth World Title at the Roxy Pro Biarritz. By winning title No. 5, Steph overtakes the women’s records set by Freida Zamba (USA), Wendy Botha (AUS) and Lisa Andersen (USA). The only other two surfers in history to claim five or more titles are Kelly Slater (USA) and Layne Beachley (AUS).

The event, which wrapped in challenging conditions at Grande Plage, saw a heated final between Tyler Wright and Gilmore, but from the start there was no stopping Steph. And runner-up Wright didn’t seem to mind, telling the ASP, “I was so excited for Steph. She was ahead of me the whole time and with five minutes to go I was like, ‘You’ve done it!’ It’s incredible—she ripped the whole contest and didn’t lose one heat, she was shredding!”

Steph may have relinquished the title to Carissa Moore in 2011, but this year she reminded everyone that she’s not going anywhere anytime soon. “This year for me was all about improving my consistency and having fun with my surfing,” said Gilmore after the event. “From when I started five years ago to where we are now, women’s surfing has improved so much. It’s an honor to be back up top as these girls push me everyday and are all incredible surfers.” The seventh and final event of the 2012 season will be the Nike U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington at the end of the month.

gooo steph.. but i kinda think her 9.00 was over scored compared to tyler’s tail slide, snap, and reverse in the close out wave that got like an 8? if steph got a 9 for two critical turns, tylers should have been like a 9.8

Thank God Steph won the Title and huge props to her. She is miles ahead of her competition in so many areas. She has style, power, consistency, can use her rails and can adapt to all conditions. She really is better than most Men at surfing. If you see her surf in person in quality waves you will be blown away. Conversely take one look at Sally Fitz and her horrible style and then you will realize how cool it is that Steph won her 5th World Title. An honor clearly deserved.
