After finishing second place to Steph Gilmore at the Roxy Pro France, Carissa Moore has capped off a stellar year and etched her name into history today, becoming the first ASP Women’s World Champion to come out of Hawaii since 1981. After finishing her rookie year on Tour last year ranked third overall, Carissa kicked off the 2011 season at the top of her game. Five events later, Carissa found herself with three event wins under her belt and a substantial lead in the ratings. And today at Cote des Basques in Biarritz, France, she effectively ended Steph Gilmore’s four-year reign at the top.

Carissa’s Road to Victory:

1st place Roxy Pro Gold Coast
2nd place Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach
2nd place Subaru Pro New Zealand
1st place Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic
1st place Billabong Rio Pro
2nd place Roxy Pro France

No one can deny it: Carissa is the best female surfer in the world right now. Photo: Kenworthy

In 2008, I was assigned to write about 16-year-old Carissa Moore for my first SURFER Profile. Like many who’d watched the young phenom’s career for almost a decade, I openly questioned whether it was all just hype, whether she would live up to all the expectation surrounding her. Carissa, my dear, I’m sorry I ever doubted you. You’ve lived up to all the hyperbolic prophecies.

Congrats to 2011 ASP Women’s World Champ Carissa Moore and event champ Steph Gilmore.
