Tyler Warren Wins Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational Presented by Vans in Salinas, Spain

Salinas, Northern Spain (July 31, 2011) - The first international Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational presented by Vans went down July 29 and 30 during the Salinas Longboard Festival, with 16 of the best longboarders in the world riding 12-lb, single fin leashless boards along with some serious style and nose riding all for a $10,000 purse.

Friday’s opening rounds saw perfect, glassy 3-4 feet waves and the guys showed a huge variety of stylish, classic maneuvers, while Saturday’s afternoon finals picked up with sets of 5 feet high waves and strong cross winds. Surfers and spectators experienced a magical atmosphere when it came down to a final heat of Justin Quintal (2X Duct Tape Champ), Al Knost (Defending Champ), Tyler Warren and Jared Mell. This event had some of the best surfing from any of the Duct Tapes, and not just the final, but the entire event.

The Final Duct Tape Spain Results:
1st. – Tyler Warren ($4,000)
2nd. – Justin Quintal ($3,000)
3rd. – Al Knost ($2,000)
4th. – Jared Mell ($1,000)

Introduced last year at the East Coast Surfing Championships in Virginia Beach, the Duct Tape Invitational is an innovative new event Vans developed with Joel Tudor that showcases longboarding in its purest aesthetic and pushes the envelope on traditional longboarding technique. In addition to Virginia Beach, Vans has brought the Duct Tape Invitational to iconic surf spots Ditch Plains in Montauk, NY and Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, CA. The next Duct Tape event is scheduled for Malibu during the MSA Comp September 9-12.

“The Duct Tape Invitational is special because it shows longboarding the way it should be,” says contest director and Vans team rider Joel Tudor. “It also highlights some of my favorite young loggers, guys that represent the next generation of longboarding.”
