Doheny Finishes Runner-Up at Oakley ASP World Pro Junior, Coffin Takes Third

HUNTINGTON BEACH, California / USA (Tuesday, October 11, 2011) – Orange County standout Andrew Doheny (Newport Beach, CA), 18, opened his ASP World Junior Tour campaign in excellent fashion, charging to a runner-up finish at the Oakley World Pro Junior in Bali when he finished runner-up to eventual winner Davey Cathels (AUS) to put the talented natural-footer in contention for the ASP World Junior Title. Fellow Californian Conner Coffin (Santa Barbara, CA), 18, also donated an impressive showing, finishing equal 3rd overall.

The Oakley ASP World Pro Junior, stop No. 1 of 3 on the 2011 ASP World Junior Tour, hosted several of the globe’s finest under-21 surfers as they began their battle for the prestigious title of ASP World Junior Champion as well as a highly-sought after spot in the major ASP PRIME and Star rated events.

Doheny, who finished 7th overall on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series for 2011, was in impressive form at the idyllic Balinese breaks of Keramas and Canggu, posting some of the event’s highest scores while overtaking international standouts including Ryan Callinan (AUS), Maxime Huscenot (FRA), Caio Ibelli (BRA), Ian Gouveia (BRA) and fellow American Conner Coffin. The stylish Californian fought hard in the final, but was unable to surpass Cathels for the victory.

“I’m super stoked because I’m not the best contest surfer,” Doheny said. “I came here last year and lost in the first round, so I said to myself as long as I win that heat I’ll be happy, then I ended up getting 2nd. I did a lot better than I thought so I’m really happy.”

Doheny now sits in the No. 2 position amongst his peers due to the runner-up finish, placing him within striking distance of the coveted ASP World Junior Title with two events remaining on the elite ASP World Junior Tour.

Conner Coffin was equally impressive in his showing against the world’s best junior talent. The powerful regular-footer also went on an international slaying campaign, defeating Tanner Hendrickson (HAW), Dale Staples (ZAF) and Brazilian talent Peterson Crisanto (BRA), but fell short of a spot in the final after in a last-minute exchange against fellow countrymen, Doheny in the Semifinals.

“I’m feeling fine, kind of bummed, but it was a good heat,” Coffin said. “It came down to the end and I caught the first wave which was a bit bumpy, and the second one that he got was cleaner and he ripped it apart. That’s how it goes, I got 5th here last year so it’s good to go one better.”

Coffin’s equal 3rd place finish at the Oakley ASP World Pro Junior also keeps him in contention for the ASP World Junior crown.

The next stop on the ASP World Junior Tour will be the Arnette World Junior in Rio de Janiero, Brazil and will take place from October 24 through November 2, 2011.
