Action Continues at HB Pier on Day Three of SIMA Surfing America USA Championships

San Juan Capistrano, Calif. (Aug 27, 2009) – It was a quintessential Southern California day with clear, sunny skies and pumping surf as the horn sounded on Day 3 of the 2009 SIMA Surfing America USA Championships presented by Verizon Wireless. The country’s top amateur talent have been ripping it up on the South Side the Huntington Beaconnercoffin_ajnestech Pier to earn a spot on the podium and a place on the 2010 PacSun USA Surf Team.

The tropical swell provided ample overhead sets with some big lefts heading into the pier for the surfers to showcase their skills on. In Heat 8 of the Boys Under 18 division Conner Coffin (CA) demonstrated how to do just that with his opening wave. He attacked a large left with full commitment, power and speed, to earn a near perfect 9.73 out of 10 possible points, setting the pace for the remainder of the heat and making known his intentions to improve upon his 2008 second place finish.

Kolohe Andino (CA), who competed in both the Boys Under 18 and Under 16 divisions, responded with dual first place finishes in Round 1; dominating his opponents in both heats by a lead of 6 points or more.

As the day progressed and the morning’s swell began to mellow, the conditions became a little more challenging, but the competitors in the Girls Under 18 division were not about to be outdone by the boys. In the very first Girls’ heat Courtney Conlogue (CA) surfed with the same voracity we saw at the US Open last month. Her fearlessness paid off on her second wave when she nailed a big hook and then proceeded to shoot through the pier for a competitive 8.67 out of a possible 10 point wave score.

Today’s action was a full day of surfing as Round 1 of the Boys Under 18 (ISA), Boys Under 16 (ISA), and Girls Under 18 (ISA) divisions were completed. The following surfers will continue their pursuit of a national title win and opportunity to compete for the United States in the 2010 Quiksilver/ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in New Zealand this January as a member of the 2010 PacSun USA Surf Team.
