Ross Williams on who to pick for your Fantasy Surfer team at Keramas

Collectively, everyone should be thanking Oakley for making this contest happen. This could quite possibly be the best World Tour venue available on the planet. Think about it: Most places offer either tubes or high performance surfing, but as cross between Backdoor and Lowers, Keramas is a perfect marriage for competition. Despite the challenges of sea breezes and big tidal changes, Keramas is very consistent. Not many waves let you get pitted as well as provide a wall that lets you go as big as humanly possible. I predict a show beyond anything we’ve seen before from a World Tour event. Don’t be surprised if you see the biggest air and biggest hack ever done in competition. Although this wave favors the regular footers, you will be hard pressed to find a complaint from the goofies. With the “airpark” Canggu as a back up spot, this event really plays into the hands of a certain group. Make your picks wisely, as this is a location that favors the bold. Guys who go big in the air and can back it up with tube riding and hacks will dominate over the technicians. I picture Jordy Smith coming out of a huge gouge into a big ramp, then nailing a giant air reverse and yelling to the crowd, “Are you not entertained!” This will be the surfers’ new favorite spot on Tour. Call your buddies and get the man cave ready with peanuts and beer, as we will all have the pleasure of watching a circus act that will make any trapeze performer proud.

Shea’s Fiji Roster

Shea Lopez gives his Fantasy Surfer picks for the Volcom Fiji Pro

Cloudbreak is a massive playing field by World Tour standards, with no distinct take off or lineup spots. The competitors who are able to clearly see the different types of waves that peel down the reef through changes in tide and swell will have a tremendous advantage. Thus the Hobgoods and Slater are obvious picks, and unless you are looking to gain some major ground on other Fantasy Surfer players with a gamble or three, it would be wise to not bet against them and go with their proven results in Fiji. If you do decide to bail on Slater, Parko is not to be overlooked here. After a terrible showing in Rio, Parko will be searching for redemption and is always one of the best guys in the water at Cloudbreak, whether competing or freesurfing.

Nothing short of John John withdrawing from the event could keep me from adding him to my team. Judging by his recent clips from Lowers and Hawaii, his ankle looks to be of no hindrance. The kid’s backside tube riding is the best on Tour. It’s evident that any hole he might have had in his surfing is quickly disappearing. The only thing that could hang him up, or any other favorite for that matter, is the tricky lulls that come with Fiji’s tidal changes.

Shea Lopez on who to pick for your Fantasy Surfer team

As I watched heats from The Drug Aware Pro, it was clear that the conditions play an important factor in determining which surfer will excel on any given day. For example: When you put a healthy and fit Dusty Payne in big, lumpy Margaret River surf, you can see his experience from big, tricky, windblown waves back home on Maui. It was that sense of comfort and confidence that allowed him to perform at his peak.
