Our board designs are direct results of team feedback, so when Dane showed up at the factory requesting a short, wide epoxy with single-concave and a huge squaretail to make the summer bearable, the Dumpster Diver was born. When he came back a week later and wanted one with a narrower nose and a Rookie tail template for the Trestles contest in three days, the second-generation Dumpster Diver was created. Using the front half of our Sashimi model, and the template for the back half of our Rookie shortboard, this second version remained under his feet all the way through to his first final at the 2009 Trestles World Tour event. Though still a work in progress, the Dumpster Diver flies and still has enough kick in the tail to carve in the pocket. If you want to try the board as it was in the Trestles contest, then get one quick, as you never know where he will take the design next.
Feedback: Short, wide and ugly, but fun and fast.
Designed For: Small to medium surf, launching. Intermediate to expert.
First released in 1995, this design faded away over the years, only ridden by a select few MTF diehards. Rob Machado’s magic 5'8" x 18 1/2" x 2 1/4" Twinfinner was hidden in our board archives until Dane recently dusted it off and brought it to life. The board Dane chose to ride in the France WCT was a replica of Rob’s MTF, minus the wings. Due to years of ding repair on Rob’s board, the wings had been filled, creating a new tail outline. When Dane asked us to re-make the magic board, this version is the result. Originally designed for smaller surf, the narrow tail and tight swallow still allow it to still be ridden in overhead waves. Low rocker makes the board extremely fast. The twin-fin setup equates to a loose feel, while the small stabilizing fins keep the board solid in the pocket.
Feedback: Cult following.
Designed For: Everyone and everywhere, likes a little curve in the wave. Novice to expert.
When Al and Rob get together, the possibilities are endless. Al steering Rob to a more conventional board, and Rob taking Al back in time, a direction he doesn’t always want to go. Reminiscent of Rob’s Biscuit model, The Gravy is shorter and wider than a normal shortboard, but with the addition of a few more performance characteristics. A more foiled and slightly narrower outline with a touch more rocker and fresh new look. With the nose width matching the tail width, not only are small waves fun again, but you can also still tear into them. This board should be ridden approximately 4" to 6" shorter, 1/8" thicker, and about an inch wider than your normal shortboard. Available in 5'3", 5'5", 5'7", 5'9", 5'11", and 6'1". Machado’s dimensions are 5'3 1/2" x 19 1/4" x 2 1/4".
Feedback: Check Rob riding his in his new movie, The Drifter.
Designed For: Novice to expert and small to overhead waves.
Imagine riding a wave without a surfboard under your feet, exploring parts of the wave that the length of a normal surfboard usually prohibits… For this, Kelly created The Wizard Sleeve. If you are ready for the volume of your standard shortboard hidden in a board that is 6" to 8" shorter, then maybe you are ready for this board. The vee-bottom on The Wizard Sleeve allows for smooth rail-to-rail transitions while the wider nose area in the entry of the board definitely helps increase planing speed over flat sections. As well, its narrow tail defines it from a fishy board and gives it more control. Available in: 5'4", 5'6", 5'8", and 5'10", and comes standard with a bump round pin-tail, which not only smoothes out your style, but suits quick direction changes perfectly. Comes standard with five sets of FCS plugs, which provides versatility. Can be ridden as either a tri or quad-fin. Included in the price are Kelly’s signature performance core fins, an $85 value.
Feedback: “Keep an open mind and try this.” — Kelly Slater Designed For: Chest-high to overhead. Intermediate to expert surfers.
This year, Dane has been riding and experimenting a lot more with CI’s other models, as well as a few unconventional shapes from the CI line. Still, the Proton remains his go-to board for pockety-style waves. Voted the 2009 board of the year by SIMA, The Proton should be your winter pick! Original and truly unique from any other board in our line, this board has continuous rocker throughout, deep single-concave, and full rails. Dane normally rides a 2 3/8" MBM and orders his Protons at 2 1/4", so order yours 1/8" thinner.
Feedback: “I like the responsive, quick feeling I get out of the Proton, and I am excited to have this board as my model.” — Dane Reynolds
Designed For: Advanced to expert surfers in punchy, waist-high to well-overhead surf. Can also be custom ordered as a step-up board.
Like the Proton for Dane, the Rookie is designed around state-of the-art surfing by a powerful surfer and has a full rail with a curvy outline. All three Gudauskas brothers, not small in stature, have found this board suits the varying conditions and waves on the WQS. Lower entry-rocker and more tail-flip out the back than the MBM+ and Proton, the Rookie is powered by single-concave throughout. Key note: Remember this board hides a lot of volume, so order 1/8" thinner and possibly 1" shorter.
Feedback: A great all-around shortboard for anything from the flat walls of Bells to the round beachbreaks of France.
Designed For: Intermediate to expert surfers in waist-high to double-overhead surf.
The Fort Knox is the redesigned T-Knox model. Taylor describes this board as “the fastest board I have ever ridden.” The Fort Knox allows the surfer to hold a rail and do long, arcing turns. This board is flat under your front foot, has straighter rocker out the back, and set within the vee are dual concaves. This keeps the water pressed between the fins, giving it an enormous amount of thrust out of turns. For 2010, based on Taylor’s feedback, Al has curved the panels around the fins, which is re-directing water flow and creating a new looser feel. Think Taylor, think Fort Knox.
Feedback: An incredibly fast and drivey all-around shortboard.
Designed For: Intermediate to expert surfers in waist-high to double-overhead waves.
The Tangent is the board design that Kelly consistently relied on to get the job done during his ninth world-title run, with wins in solid surf at Fiji, J-Bay, and Trestles. In 2009, he won the WCT in Brazil on this board. It consists of single-concave and comes with the popular and versatile squash-tail or Kelly’s preferred round-pin tail. During the quest for a ninth title, Kelly and Al basically went off on “a tangent” when it came to board design. They tried many formulas that involved one single constant: the rocker. They manipulated countless variables in design: vee bottoms, concaves, shrinking down the size and widening the board up, changing tail temps, fin angles, and fin clusters, all depending on the wave to be surfed. This year Kelly has been experimenting with vee-bottoms on this model and really liking the feel, so look for this in the future.
Feedback: “This is my work horse— it’s a very consistent all-around board.” — Kelly Slater
Designed For: Intermediate to expert surfers in waist-high to double-overhead waves.
In landlocked neighborhoods, a man’s “whip” is his customized ride, his prized mode of transportation. During the Europe leg in 2009, Kelly’s “Whip” for less than perfect surf was his 5'9" x 185/8" x 2 5/16"” — one inch shorter than what he won Snapper and Bells on in 2008. This is Kelly and Al’s re-worked version of the Flyer, with a few secret changes. This board is faster and more forgiving. If you’re looking for a board that excels when your shortboard seems to bog, this is the board for you.
Feedback: Should be ridden 3" to 4" smaller than your shortboard, 1/4" wider, and the same thickness.
Designed For: Everyday use by intermediate to expert surfers in knee- to head-high surf.
A worldwide favorite, this design excels in small to medium surf, but still rides and responds like a conventional shortboard. Al considers this the best small-wave shortboard he has ever designed. It should be ridden 2" to 3" shorter and 1/4" to 1/2" wider than your normal shortboard. We can build the Flyer up to 7'6" for you big guys.
Feedback: This year Tanner won his first WQS event on his 21st birthday on a 5'11" flyer.
Designed For: Small to medium surf for all levels of surfers from beginner to expert.

A short and stubby tri-fin, the biscuit design was developed with Rob Machado. Like Rob, the Biscuit rides free and easy in the smallest surf and catches waves like boards a foot longer. Order your biscuit 8" shorter, 1" to 2" wider, and 1/2" to 3/4" thicker than your shortboard. “…foam is your friend…don’t be scared of it. The Pod, an inspiration of Kelly’s for new surfboards and design direction, is built to fly. Deep concaves with a foiled nose and a swallow-tail keep the Pod lively, while maintaining its high-performance. The “snub” nose puts volume forward, allowing for maximum planing and wave catching. The wide, curvy outline makes the Pod friendly for all levels of surfers. Ride this board 6" to 8" shorter, about 1 1/2" wider, and about 1/8" thicker. Also available in a quad set-up. Order custom or comes standard at your local dealer in:
5’4" x 19 1/2" x 2 1/4"
