Shoobie Awareness

Beware the fair-skinned flocks invading our beaches

| posted on May 01, 2014

With summer around the bend, or for all intents and purposes having already arrived, it’s officially shoobie season in Southern California. How to spot ‘em? Look for socks with sandals, or worse actual shoes on the beach (from where the term originated). Look for pale complexions on a Saturday morning, or lobster-red skin on a Sunday afternoon. Look for out-of-state plates, inside out wetsuits, broken laws, and heinous faux pas. Tread softly when dealing with them, they have as much a right to the beach as us, but stay aware and vigilant in regulating the lineups and the sand. Keep an eye on the shoobies, and if things get out of hand, you can always scream “shark.”
