Ron Stoner X Billabong
A new line of t-shirts by Billabong incorporates iconic photos by Ron Stoner
In the 1960s, when surf culture in Southern California was entering its heyday, a young photographer named Ron Stoner was able to capture some of the decades most iconic surf images for SURFER. As a staff photographer in his early 20s, Stoner was a legend in the surf world and once had six consecutive SURFER covers. While his unique ability to find and photograph the perfect moment both in and out of the water was unparalleled at the time, Stoner’s personal life proved to be tumultuous with the once-touted lensman’s battle with schizophrenia. In the span of just a few years, Stoner had gone from being one of the most successful photographers in the sport to quite literally falling completely off the map. In the 1970s, he was listed as a missing person. In 1994, he was declared dead. Nearly four decades later, his work continues to endure.
In partnership with SURFER, Billabong has created a unique line of tee shirts using some of Stoner’s most iconic images. And if there’s one thing we can whole-heartedly approve of, it’s Ron Stoner’s photography.
