Comments: “Cape Fear was pumping on a super east swell direction. That’s why the lip is so think,” explains Mark Mathews of this photo of him taken by 15-year-old Bailey Jones. “I was about to green light the Red Bull Cape Fear Challenge, but it was almost an hour between solid sets.” Bailey, who is from an area of Queensland where there is no surf, flew down for this swell. Thankfully, this rare moment without a massive backwash or crowd blocking the angle presented the perfect opportunity to capture Cape Fear at its most menacing.
