North Shore 2: Please No

Design North Shore 2 outta the picture, haole

Did you catch that? Turtle is wearing a Chandler Surfboards T-shirt! Somebody actually made a shirt festooned with the Chandler Surfboards logo. People really, truly, love North Shore. And now some of the people who really, truly love North Shore are getting desperate to make North Shore 2, a mere 30 years after the original debuted.

No. Please stop.

Attention North Shore writer, producer, cast, and whoever it is that Turtle is threatening to round up to get the sequel moving: Don’t do this. You don’t need to make another. You’ve already succeeded where so many have failed: You made the perfect Hollywood surf movie. You have nothing to gain from returning to that trough. What are the chances that you’ll once again capture lightning in a bottle? You see all those people dressed up like North Shore characters in your promo vid? You don’t want to disappoint them do you? Where is there to go but down from such adulation? I’ll tell you where—In God’s Hands. Is that how you want us to remember North Shore 2?

North Shore succeeds in spite of itself. That’s why it’s a cult classic. That might actually be the definition of a cult classic, now that I think about it. Robbie Page in that ridiculous hat. Laird’s impossible dancing at the Halloween party. The mind-blowing editing wherein longboards were exchanged for shortboards on the same ride. The ease at which people took three strokes and made it out to the lineup at Sunset. Hans Hedemann’s bottom-turn scowl. Every word that came out of Occy’s mouth. All brilliant. And all achieved with blind luck. No way North Shore 2 accidentally gets everything right just like the original.

Very few people know all the words to a single movie, yet gather together a group of American surfers between the ages of 30 and 50 and we can easily recreate North Shore with something close to 85 percent accuracy. Think about that. This is the kind of dedication you’re messing with.

North Shore crew: You’ve already done it. You’ve made a perfect movie. Almost nobody in this life knows what it means to taste that kind of perfection, to fly that close to the sun. Just leave it there, leave it alone. Treat us mo ‘bettah.

Ah come on! Let the Turtle entertain us again! A legend of our time – if he is keen for more action, the surf industry should back this 100%! Don’t be so serious Surfer – a FUN movie will be good for the new generation of kids and their parents too. Bring it on.

  • dontneednochokebrain

I literally wore out my VHS copy of this, that I taped from HBO back in the day. Best movie ever. Make a sequel–why the f**k not. It will be another instant classic–how can it not be with those characters?

  • cavey

Sounds to me like you have a single film mentality

    • Rowan420

Us soul surfers dont care about the competition

That ain’t a wave. That’s a ripple. I’ve seen bigger waves when the toilet flushes mate

This article brought a long since shed tear; the one not having dribbled since Rick boarded that airplane for art school.

    Housman nailed it.

As the director and co-writer with Randal Kleiser of the original “North Shore”, I can assure Justin Housman that the envisioned sequel will be just as iconic and exciting as the original. It will be rooted in the amazing dynamic of the North Shore today.

For years, fans having been coming up to us and begging for a sequel. It wasn’t until a visit to the 2013 Triple Crown that the right idea finally congealed: setting the story against the spectacle of that great event.

Relax, Justin: it’s gonna be tight!

    Uh yeaaaaahhh, no.

  • Haunani Rochlen

It is gonna be great! I can’t wait for NS2!!! You are sooo wrong Justin…

  • Rick Kane

There are only 3 surf movies, 1 – North Shore, like you said some crap surf editing but epic one liners and actually real surfers acting, genius. 2 – Point Break, Hollywood actors pretending to surf, brilliant. 3 – Blue Juice, British surf film based in Cornwall, bit of fun, totally bonza script dude, i mean macking whack chowder baby, and shit, sweet. Xx

When the movie debuts here, don’t be there, or you’re gonna get drilled.

  • Brian Goddess Jr

I disagree with surfermag. Northshore is a staple of surfing movies along with Big Wednesday, Endless Summer, and many others that have come out since then. It was a Hollywood surf movie with more memorable lines than any surf movie that comes to mind.

  • Panther

    Ya, No

  • Jeffrey Bertch

This movie was for fun. Try not to let purist elitism spoil your sense of humor.

  • Spike

Justin this is so good… Thanks for saying it. peace.

  • Rich Clark Images

Hell they are remaking everything else so why not. It was an epic. Yeah? No.

  • JM101

I see both sides of the coin here… But alas… I started surfing because of North Shore. I spent countless hours building cardboard cut-out surfboards that were identical to the ones on the movie, and “skimboarding” them on the carpet in my basement pretending with my friends we were in Hawaii and not in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. I cried in the video store when it was rented, and recorded it to AUDIO TAPE so I could listen to it in my Walkman. I’ve done almost nothing but skateboard, surf, and snowboard since I saw that movie, and now its what I do for work. North Shore is saved on every device and computer I own, just in case I need something to pass the time or need a pick-me-up. I honestly don’t think the magic of the first movie could ever be re-created, but I’ll be the first guy in line at the theatre. I say go a head, go shred.

  • Mookie Surfboards

Hell yes do NS2 but you need to bring back as may as you can from the first movie, show where they are bring Rick back to the shaping shack with interaction and hook ups with Chandler then bring in the next gen with Rick passing on what he learned as well as turtle
    Mike Mookie Surfboards

  • Liam Trujillo

be sure to bring back that disgusting Hawaiian hooker from the first one..

    “I take champagne.. ok?”

  • mike d

    I want my north shore 2 p
be classic like the first one but you need to get the whole cast back to make the movie right
