Verizon Wireless Hawaii World Junior Surf Team Heads To New Zealand

hawaiiteammg_0505Hawaii’s young AMBASSADORS OF ALOHA are at it again. On January 14th twelve of Hawaii’s best wave riding talents under 18 years of age will be representing Hawaii in New Zealand, at the ISA JUNIOR WORLD SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS. Up to 40 countries are scheduled to compete within 8 days of competition.

This annual team event is one of the most exciting contest that is broadcast live on the Internet by the International Surfing Association. The association supports over 70 nations around the globe. Since its inception in 1964 the ISA recognizes Hawaii as the “birthplace of surfing,” and in turn Hawaii competes as a separate “island nation on a global stage. January 14th the team will begin their journey with their coaches,trainers and chaperones to the shores of New Zealand to compete and represent Hawaii.

There will be a send off party and media event from 5pm-8:15pm in Honolulu at Hard Rock Café on January 12th. . Guest emcee and comedian Augie T. will take the chair and introduce a variety of dignitaries. The media event will feature the introduction of some of this years Junior World Team. Guest speakers include Lieutenant Governor Duke Aiona, State Senate Minority leader and former world surfing champion Senator Fred Hemmings. The send off will also pay tribute to our islands Beach Boys, Hawaii’s original Ambassadors of Aloha, with guest speakers George Downing and Tony Moniz talking of the aloha along the shoreline of Waikiki from yesteryear to today. Davey Shipley a head judge for the ASP will also discuss the competitive nature of the sport around the world. There will be live music with Michael Tulba of ONE NIGHTSTAND. There will be raffles,drawings and a live auction to benefit ACCESSURF Hawaii. Admission is free and open to the public, with menu items and refreshments available for purchase on the lanai of Hard Rock Café.
Last years send off party raised thousands of dollars for the ACCESSURF Hawaii organization. This years event will feature a multitude of personalized surfboards being sold and auctioned off.. A brand new personalized board donated by surfer extraordinaire Jordy Smith, will be auctioned off live on FM 100 with Augie T. on January 12th during his radio show. While Dusty Paynes board he used during the triple crown as well as the surfboard that Keanu Asing used to win the Haleiwa International event a few weeks ago will generate even more revenue for Accessurf. A host of merchandise including tee shirts and customized tennis shoes have been donated to this event from NIKE 6.0.

ACCESSURF Hawaii is a non profit organization that features free monthly Day At The Beach programs, servicing over 80 families each month with therapeutic ocean access, adaptive surfing and swimming in a barrier free environment. Their vision is to make beaches more accessible to people with disabilities through its programs throughout the state of Hawaii and worldwide for generations to come.

The Junior World Surf Team is supported by HARD ROCK CAFE which hosts these gatherings. The official team nutrient support sponsor is H20 OVERDRIVE a new creative drink that helps athletes and fitness buffs reach top performance levels while training or competing.
The team’s title sponsor, in their second year is VERIZON WIRELESS who will have a booth at the send off party. The booth will consist of some of Verizon Wireless featured devices and information about some of their superior services. It should be noted that with the support of Verizon Wireless the Hawaii Junior World Surf Team has been able to focus on honing their progressive surfing skills, cleaning the beaches to help keep them litter free all the while maintaining the Aloha spirit of Hawaii

The Junior Hawaii World Team Captain is Rainos Hayes, and its coaches are Kahea Hart, and Megan Abubo, while the overseer of daily activities is Bert Ishimaru.
