Turtle Bay, HI (October 11, 2011) – Turtle Bay Resort is thrilled to announce the implementation of a wood-shaped surfboard course led by Hawaiian craftsman Tom “Pohaku” Stone beginning in the first week of November. The course, which will run in four installments with each lasting five days—will be held on the idyllic grounds at Turtle Bay and will offer surfers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn an ancient craft from one of the most esteemed Old World shapers alive today.
More than just the perfect way to experience a tangible slice of Hawaiian culture, those who attend Pi’I Mai Kanalu—which translates into “catch the wave” in Hawaiian—are able to take home a piece of their stay in the islands for only $1,500. As much a work of art as it is an original Hawaiian surfboard shape, each participant will sculpt their board from an array of local woods including koa, ohai, and others.
Under the guiding light of Mr. Stone, participants will carve boards based on ancient Hawaiian templates out of a single piece of wood. Although the act of carving your own board based on an ancient Hawaiian template will undoubtedly be fulfilling in its own rite, one can only imagine the thrill of catching your first own wave in the same fashion as the ancient Hawaiians.
The dates for the course are as follows:
November 1 – 5, 2011
December 6 – 10, 2011
January 10 – 14, 2012
February 7 – 11, 2012
To register for the course, please send an email inquiry to Tom Pohaku Stone at: email@example.com or go to TurtleBaySurf.com for more info.
