Santa Cruz, CA (April 26, 2012) – In celebration of the dedication of Santa Cruz as a World Surfing Reserve, the Surfrider Foundation (Santa Cruz Chapter) and Del Mar Theatre are teaming up to feature local surf films by Dana ‘Skimshady’ Baldzikowski and Rocky Romano, followed by the featured award-winning documentary, ‘Minds in the Water’.

The evening will begin with a film from the winner of the Surf-Shorts film competition, Dana ‘Skimshady’ Baldzikowski, followed by a special screening of ‘Danger’ by Rocky Romano. Selected from amongst many quality Santa Cruz related film entries, Skimshady’s film epitomizes the current, local surf scene through high-energy footage of many Santa Cruz surfers. Romano’s film, ‘Danger,’ highlights the athletes, sport, culture, and realities of Big Wave Surfing in Half Moon Bay, California at the legendary “Mavericks” wave.

The featured film, “Minds in the Water”, is an award winning documentary following the quest of professional surfer Dave Rastovich and his friends to protect dolphins, whales and the oceans they all share. Through Dave’s journey—a five-year adventure spanning the globe from Australia to the Galapagos, Tonga, California, Alaska and Japan—we see one surfer’s quest to activate his community to help protect the ocean and its inhabitants. A Q&A will follow the screening of “Minds in the Water” with co-producer/writer Steve Barilotti.

On Saturday April 28th World Surfing Reserves and the Santa Cruz Local Stewardship council are officially dedicating Santa Cruz as a World Surfing Reserve. The World Surfing Reserves initiative creates a global network of Surfing Reserves designed to educate the world about the tremendous universal value of these special places and provide tools to help local communities better protect cherished surf breaks. Santa Cruz will join Manly Beach, Australia; Ericiera, Portugal; and Malibu, USA as the fourth World Surfing Reserve. For more info visit http://www.worldsurfingreserves.org/.
