| posted on September 28, 2009

More than a dozen unique surfboards and surf memorabilia will be auctioned off at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel during the Second Annual Holiday Surfboard Auction to benefit Surfers Healing, a surf camp which introduces children with autism and their families to the therapeutic properties of surfing.

Items for auction include signed surfboards and surf memorabilia from such legends as Kelly Slater, Laird Hamilton, Matt Archbold, Makua Rothman, Sunny Garcia, Garrett McNamarra, Dustin Barca, Michael and Dereck Ho, Shane and Gavin Beshen, The Malloy Brothers, Shaun Tomson, Joel Tudor, Nathan Fletcher and Timmy Patterson, as well as celebrities Scott Caan, Benjiman Bratt and Robert Hays, to name just a few. All surf items will be on display from Sunday, November 22 through December 31, 2009 with the bidding closing at noon on December 31, 2009. Items will be available to take home on Friday, January 1, 2010. Additionally, a variety of unique surf items from local collections will be on display.

Surfers Healing was founded by Israel and Danielle Paskowitz. Their son, Isaiah, was diagnosed with autism at age three. Like many autistic children, he often suffered from sensory overload – simple sensations could overwhelm him. The ocean was the one place where he seemed to find respite. A former competitive surfer, Israel hit upon an idea–with Isaiah on the front of his surfboard, and Izzy steering from the back, the two spent the day surfing together. Surfing had a profound impact on Isaiah. Israel and Danielle decided they wanted to share this unique therapy with other autistic children. They began to host day camps at the beach where autistic children and their families could be exposed to a completely new experience of surfing.
