The 3rd Annual OluKai Ho’olaule’a This Coming Weekend

Maui, HI (May 13, 2011)– The 3rd annual OluKai Ho’olaule’a two-day ocean festival is this weekend, May 14th and 15th 2011, at Kanaha Beach Park, Maui, celebrating the ocean lifestyle, island culture, tradition, giving back, and ‘Ohana!

Elite watermen, waterwomen and enthusiasts will have the opportunity to paddle race the famous Maliko downwind course on Maui’s North shore, an eight-mile stretch from Maliko Gulch to the Lae ’Ula O Kai Canoe Club at Kanaha Beach Park. Event registration will be available onsite Saturday and Sunday, 10am at Maliko Gulch, $60 Recreational/$120 Elite.

A $15,000 prize purse will be shared equally between the men’s and women’s elite division of each racing discipline. The standup paddle race will take place on Saturday starting at noon and the OC1 race will begin at noon on Sunday.

Beyond the competitive paddle races, OluKai has expanded this year’s event to include a ‘Ohana Fun Paddle’ Saturday, from Paia Youth and Cultural Center to Kanaha Beach Park. This 3 mile non-competitive, non-timed paddle was developed for ocean enthusiast of all ages and all skill levels. http://www.olukai.com/Hoolaulea/funpaddle

In addition everyone is invited to join in ancient Hawaiian games hosted by Maui Cultural Lands, sailing canoe rides by 2010 HSCA Champions Team Kamakakoa, traditional luau dinner, hula performance and a concert headlined by special musical guest, Paula Fuga.

The event will be broadcast nationally to 50 million households on Universal Sports, an NBC sports partnership. OluKai and Ocean Paddler TV are excited to showcase the incredible skill, endurance and dedication of the world’s elite paddlers while offering unique insight into the authentic culture that surrounds the Hawaiian ocean paddling community.

Part of the proceeds from the OluKai Ho’olaule’a go to the OluKai ‘Ohana Giveback Program.
Beneficiaries include Maui Cultural Lands and the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association’s Junior Lifeguard Program. These organizations will be presented with donations at a special ceremony concluding the weekend festivities on Sunday afternoon.
