Rip Curl's Colin Moran And Koa Smith Go One-And-Two At Volcom VQS Champs

colin-moran-volcom-winner-1Costa Mesa, CA (May 17, 2010): Fourteen-years old with $5G’s in your pocket….not bad for 3 days of surfing. Just ask 14-year old Rip Curl team rider, Colin Moran. The Newport Beach thoroughbred recently went on a tear at his homebreak at 54th Street to claim the victory against the world’s best juniors along with $5,000 cash.

This is not surprising to those who know about this quiet wave killer. Only starting surfing competitively a couple years ago, Colin is known to blitz his comp…from the basketball court to any so-Cal beach. After a slew of results, Colin made the commitment to go all-in with his surfing.

“Are you kidding me? This is huge for me,” said a beaming Moran. “It feels great to hold it down here in Newport, where I surf every day.”

Close behind Moran in the 2nd spot was Rip Curl teammate, Koa Smith, who still walked away with $2,000 in contest earnings. Although Koa led for much of the heat, it was Colin’s tweaked-out air reverse in the dying minutes that gave him the lead, the victory, and the $5k.

Big props to Colin and Koa for their respective performances this past weekend. Lock into ripcurl.com for more on these youngsters.
