Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang gets the Green Light for Saturday

rip-curl-padang-cupPadang Padang, Bali — The 2009 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is set to go off in the next 24 hours. A solid southwest groundswell has hit Bali and contest directors have switched the official contest status from yellow to green, anticipating a Saturday morning start.

The field of 32 invited surfers – 16 of Indonesia’s best and 16 of the world’s top tube riders – has assembled on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula and is standing by.

“I think the swell is going to get really good by this evening,” said Hawaiian competitor Jamie O’Brien. “Tomorrow morning should be pumping.”

Contest directors are considering holding the contest over two days instead of just one, swell permitting. This would allow them to maximize the swell and hold longer two-man heats. The opening round of 32 will feature four-man heats. After that, all heats will be man-versus-man.

“We don’t want to see a wave-catching competition,” explained contest director Pete Matthews. “We want to see a tuberiding competition.”

The surfers will all be at Padang Padang beach Saturday morning for a 6 a.m. check-in.
