After 14 years of riding for O’Neill, the details of John John Florence’s new deal are official. For the next five years, Florence will be riding for Hurley. Here is the official release:

COSTA MESA, CA. JANUARY 8, 2013 – Hurley announced today that it has signed Hawaiian prodigy John John Florence to a five-year agreement. Florence, 20, will lead an already stellar surf team including Julian Wilson, Carissa Moore and Rob Machado, and will drive Hurley’s award-winning Phantom platform. “John is the most innovative and talented surfer to come along in the last 20 years,” says Hurley’s VP of Sports Marketing Pat O’Connell. “Dream what might be possible in surfing and I’m sure he’s going to exceed it in the next five years. We just want to support him in every way as he continues to inspire us in all conditions.”

In just one full year on the ASP World Tour, Florence has already captured the hearts and minds of the surfing world. While still a teenager, he finished fourth in the world, achieved a Triple Crown title, three wins at Pipe, an ASP world tour win, a runner-up at the Surfer Poll and invites to two of the world’s most prestigious big-wave events. Growing up at Pipeline with his mom and two younger brothers, Florence thrives in surfing’s most high-risk situations and is looking forward to his new beginning with Hurley. “I am very grateful and happy to be riding for Hurley, especially at this time of my life,” says Florence. “To be able to start 2013 with a new team and good people will ultimately help to accomplish my goals I have set for the future. I am excited to be a part of such an innovative company and can’t wait to see what happens in the years to come”

Florence will help inform the next generation of Phantom boardshorts immediately as he prepares for his sophomore debut on the 2013 ASP World Tour in late February. “I’ve always liked to surround myself around magic,” said Hurley CEO and Founder Bob Hurley. “John John has that special talent that only comes around every few decades or so. It’s a magic that will transcend well beyond our world and will make us all strive to be better. Needless to say, I’m humbled, honored and so looking forward to supporting John John as he revolutionizes surfing over and over again.”

There are so many superlatives in this announcement that you would be forgiven for thinking it was Nike he was signing for…

And what real surfer, worth his salt, would want to wear anything from nike or hurley?

A few months ago, John was supporting the “Don’t do it foundation”, a group with enough guts to stand up against nike ( a track and field shoe company ) , now hes riding for nike. i guess enough money can buy some people.. Hurley is nike, and every dollar given to hurley goes directly into nikes pocket.. Now you have a bunch of clueless wannabees walking around with the name of some half baked shaper from H.B on their chests. Bob Hurley was a average shaper from H.B. who had the ego to name the company after himself. Seems like a good time for a boycott.

Just a few months ago ,John was supporting the (Don’t do it foundation), a group of people fighting nike and their greed. Now he’s riding for nike, I guess some people do have a price and can be bought. Riding for hurley is the same as riding for nike, every dollar hurley gets goes directly in nikes pocket. nike is basically a mainstream track and field shoe company, how square is that..
