The Oakley One Wave Wonder, the hunt for the best documented ride by a South African surfer, is now live on www.1wavewonder.co.za Tubes, airs, carves, drops, massive waves and combos – anything goes in the search for that one ride that’ll blow everybody away.
What is it?
The Oakley One Wave Wonder, powered by Zigzag Magazine, in association with All Aboard Travel. A competition to find the Ride Of The Season, with all sorts of killer prizes in the mix.
The ride can take place anywhere in the world. The only requirement is that the surfer is a South African. Hawaii, Indonesia, Mexico, Outers, Dungeons, Supers or New Pier. All are fair game for the intrepid South African charger.
To push South African surfers in their own disciplines. Whether it be taking the plunge at Dungeons, dropping over the edge at Kalk Bay or threading the Car Park section, all angles of our surfing world are eligible for this event. There is a R10,000 monthly prize for the Ride Of The Month, with R6k going to the rider and R4k going to the photographer/videographer. At the end of June all the monthly finalists go into contention for the Ride Of The Season, which could win the surfer another R30k cash, and the photographer/videographer an all expenses paid trip for two to G-land, worth well over R30k, and made possible by All Aboard Travel. In theory though, rider and photographer could easily split the cash and the trip as well.
Rides have been counting since the 1 January, but the site goes live today. So January – June 2011 is the contest period. We should get some cyclone swells in Durban, some big fronts in Cape Town, a few sublime West Coast swells and possibly a run of thundering East Coast swells as well. The timing is right and there are some frothing surfers out there.
All South Africans are eligible, anywhere in the world. If you know how to grab your rail and charge a backhand bomb, you’re in. If you like to take off behind the peak at The Factory, you’re also in. If you’re new school and work on flips and rolls and spins, then you’re the man. Having said that, the event is open to any stand-up shortboard surfers, male or female.
