| posted on October 28, 2009

HONOLULU – Wed., Oct. 28, 2009 — The women’s Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, presented by Rockstar Energy Drink, welcomes a new frontier of surfers and a new day for women’s event sponsorship this winter, unveiling an exciting lineup of world class competition on Oahu’s North Shore, Hawaii.

With the average age of the top five rated women on tour today at just 23 years , this will be the youngest leading group we’ve seen hit the North Shore in over a decade. Stephanie Gilmore (Australia), Silvana Lima (Brazil), Sofia Mulanovich (Peru), Melanie Bartels (Hawaii), and Coco Ho (Hawaii) have brought an unprecedented level of performance and excitement to the global world of women’s surfing.

Acknowledging this new era for the sport, Vans is proud to present the Vans Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa, November 12-23. Vans has introduced a specialty event that will feature ASP’s top 16 rated women surfers and throw four of the sport’s hottest rising stars into the mix: Carissa Moore (Hawaii), Leila Hurst (Hawaii), Lee-Ann Curren (France), Malia Manuel (Hawaii).

Sunset Beach welcomes a new dawn for the women, with Gidget Worldwide Inc. stepping up to the plate. The Gidget Pro Sunset Beach, Nov.24 to Dec. 6, will be the penultimate event on the 2009 ASP Women’s World Championship Tour. With the battle for the world title so tight, this event will be crucial to those gunning for the No.1 spot.

Billabong continues to stoke the outer-island fans with the Billabong Pro Maui, Dec. 8-20. As the only outer-island event of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Series, and the world title decider no less, this event is the perfect excuse to board that Hawaiian Airlines flight and take a Maui retreat to see the 2009 ASP World Champion claim her crown at the right-hand perfection of Honolua Bay.
Hawaii Rookie Coco Ho Returns as WQS Champion & With a Dream
to Join the Family List of Triple Crown Champions
This time last year, Coco Ho, of North Shore’s famous Ho surfing family, was days away from realizing her dream of qualifying for the ASP World Championship Tour. This winter she returns as the champion of the ASP World Qualifying Series and with an eye on the Vans Triple Crown title. At just 18 years of age, Coco has wasted no time in getting down to business. If she could win the women’s Vans Triple Crown series title, she would be the third Ho to do so behind her Uncle Derek (1984, 86, 88, 90) and her father Michael (1983, 85). The title carries the added bonus of a $10,000 purse.
