Konig Paddles California Coast for a Cause

Journey: The coastline between Santa Cruz and Santa Barbara is home to some of the most magical and raw landscapes, sea life and nature California has to offer. Santa Barbara-based surfer/environmentalist Chadd Konig will be traveling down the coast on a “prone/knee paddle board” for approximately 250 miles. Many regions of this coastline are only accessible by water and will be explored during this journey.

Dates: August 1st, 2012 to August 20th, 2012

Intention: Paddle the Central California coast to explore, enjoy and document the beauty of its coastline. Chadd will be paddling to raise awareness and direct people’s attention to petitions and legislation that will aim to stop “Fracking” in California.

Issue: Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is an increasingly common oil and gas production technique that utilizes a concentrated pressure of water, sand and (hazardous) chemicals to fracture geological formations, most often shale rock, and stimulate the flow of oil or gas. In some situations, Fracking has been linked to severe instances of water and air pollution and other environmental harm.

Chadd has teamed up with the Environmental Defense Center of Santa Barbara to address this issue. Check out their webpage for more information on “Fracking.”
