Firewire Helps Rerip Expand Surfboard Recycling Program
They've teamed to spread the non-profit organization's popular board recycling program throughout California.
SAN DIEGO, CA January 8, 2013 — Rerip has teamed with Firewire Surfboards to spread the non-profit organization’s popular board recycling program throughout California. Rerip currently collects used surfboards through eight California drop off points. The new partnership with Firewire is expected to at least double the number of Rerip drop off points. Firewire joins Rerip partners Patagonia and Coconut Peets.
“Rerip has only been successful because of its volunteers, community support and long-standing partnerships,” said Rerip co-founder Meghan Dambacher. “Firewire’s support will enable us to offer more drop off points up the coast, and we hope that more shops and volunteers will participate.”
Used boards collected by Rerip are repaired and donated to kids and other local and international non-profit organizations, and used for art projects or for research and development. Some of the used boards are repaired and may be purchased at Coconut Peets in Point Loma, Calif. All proceeds support Rerip’s mission to keep boards out of landfills. Co-founded in 2006 by Dambacher and Lisa Carpenter, Rerip has repurposed thousands of boards through promotional events, awareness campaigns, and used board drop off locations.
As part of the partnership, Firewire will help Rerip transport used boards through Action Sports Express, which delivers surfboards up and down the California coast.
“There is clearly a need and an opportunity to repurpose used surfboards,” said Mark Price, CEO of Firewire. “This not only eliminates the need to dump them in the landfill, but they are also a resource of joy and inspiration to the secondary user. Rerip is accomplishing both objectives, and we are stoked to include some of our surfboards and relationship with Action Sports Express to help the organization expand.”
Founded in 2006, Rerip.org is run by a team of volunteers that establishes locations for people to drop off their unwanted boards, fins and
wetsuits. Rerip also hosts local events and awareness campaigns, and is finding and inspiring new ways to reduce waste and harmful practices. For more information please visit http://www.rerip.com/.
