Chinatown Boardroom Announces the 3rd Thursday Surf Discussion Series
Honolulu, HI, September 17, 2009
Chinatown Boardroom is pleased to announce Senator Fred Hemmings as the speaker for September’s 3rd Thursday Surf Discussion Series. The achievements of Sen. Fred Hemmings are quite extensive, he is an avid sportsman who has won numerous awards over the years. Today he is one of the world’s foremost authorities and proponents of Hawaiian water sports. In the mid-1960s Hemmings began winning international surfing championships. In 1964 he became the youngest person to win the Makaha International Surfing Championship, and four years later in 1968 he was crowned the World Surfing Champion in Rincon, Puerto Rico. In the 1970′s Hemmings traded his surfboard for a business suit when he founded “Sports Enterprises Inc” and went to New York City to sell sports events he produced in Hawaii. Soon after he became a National Television Commentator working with NBC, CBS, and ABC. Hemmings also innovated one of surfing’s premier events, “The Pipeline Masters,” 35 years ago. He went on to create “The World Cup of Surfing” for men and women, and the “Triple Crown of Surfing” events. In 1976, Hemmings co-founded the International Professional Surfing (IPS) organization-the first of its kind-with a world circuit of events. He ran the world pro surfing circuit until 1983. He was inducted into the International Surfing Hall of Fame in 1991, the Hawaii State Sports Hall of Fame in 1998 and this past July he was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame in Surf City USA, Huntington Beach. He is also the author of three books: “The Soul of Surfing is Hawaiian, “Surfing, Hawaii’s Gift to the World,” and “Illustrated Surfing Encyclopedia”.
