LOS ANGELES, CALIF. (September 4, 2013) – Filmmaker Jason Baffa’s third independent feature, Bella Vita will World Premiere at the 61st Annual San Sebastian Film Festival on September 22nd, 2013. Shot in both 35mm film and high-definition the picture captures the beauty of Italy, its people and passion. Since its creation in 1953, the San Sebastian Film Festival held in Donostia-San Sebastian Spain has established itself as one of the most important cinema festivals in the world, being one of the 14 “A” category festivals accredited by the FIAPF.
Baffa, known for bringing story-telling to the modern surf genre classics, One California Day, 2009 and Singlefin: yellow, 2004, joins Chris Del Moro (co-founder of Surfers for Cetaceans) to make Bella Vita, an exploration of the blossoming and first-time-documented by an international team, Italian-surfing-scene. Both from Italian-born-fathers, Del Moro and Baffa spent three months traveling the Italian country-side not only in search of ride-able surf but on a quest to re-connect with their Italian heritage and study how a land of old-world-tradition is embracing the modern sub-culture of surfing. Del Moro’s pilgrimage is joined by international surfers Dave Rastovich, Lauren L. Hill, Conner and Parker Coffin as well as Italian stand-outs, Alessandro Ponzanelli and Leonardo Fioravanti.
The Premiere will be complimented with the release of a limited edition companion book, Arkitip #0059, Bella Vita. For the first time in their long publishing history, Arkitip is producing an issue edition to coincide with the release of a film. The book celebrates the beauty of Bella Vita in print while revealing the back story of how it came about. Along with featuring some of Del Moro’s art, Arkitip delves into all things behind the scenes in the making of the film. To aid in the story telling, visuals include exclusive storyboards, sketches, unseen video stills, and essays by the creatives behind this very unique production. Each issue will include a custom Bella Vita Velcro-wallet thanks to the support of Quiksilver.
