SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., April 12, 2010 – For the second consecutive year, the 6.0 Lowers Pro returns to Trestles, San Clemente, Calif., May 4-8, as an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star PRIME with a $145,000 prize purse. The first U.S. stop on the global Oakley Pro Junior series will run concurrently.
The 6.0 Lowers Pro’s status as one of only three 6-Star PRIMES on the U.S. Mainland in combination with its location at one of North America’s most revered surf spots assures an impressive list of competitors ranging from former World Champions to current World Tour standouts, and on-the-rise young stars. A small field of 128 men will contend for the $20,000 first-place payout and the 3,500 points on offer, the most WQS ratings points possible in a single event.

The 6.0 Lowers Pro, a historically prestigious event even prior to 2008 when Nike 6.0 came on as title sponsor, has seen previous champions including nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (Cocoa Beach, FL), three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (North Shore, HI), Rob Machado (Encinitas, CA), Shane Beschen (San Clemente, CA), C.J. Hobgood (Melbourne Beach, FL) and Tom Curren (Santa Barbara, CA), to name a few.
The talent on tap last year, the inaugural year as a 6-Star PRIME, was remarkable. In the end, World Tour stalwart Fred Patacchia (North Shore, HI) defeated defending event champion Ben Bourgeois (Wrightsville Beach, NC) in a man-on-man Final. The two had also met in the Final of the 2008 contest when Bourgeois took the win.
Running concurrently, the Oakley Pro Junior will see 32 men (20 years and younger) battling for crucial ASP regional ratings points to qualify for the World Junior Tour events Last year, former World Junior Champion Kai Barger (Haiku, HAW) claimed the Oakley Pro Junior title after an amazing display of progressive surfing alongside fellow finalists Davey Cathels (AUS), Dillon Perillo (Malibu, CA) and Kiron Jabour (Haleiwa, HI).
Originating in 2007, PRIME is the highest possible ASP rating only given to competition venues considered to be at “prime” locations. Around the world, only nine locations have been identified as worthy of the rank in 2010. World famous Lower Trestles, known for it’s perfect wide-open faces and idyllic California setting, was the first Mainland U.S. location to ever warrant the grade.
